PART 5: The Legal and Psychological Battle

The game shifted instantly from domestic abuse to high-stakes legal warfare. Armed with the recording, Mariana didn't go to a standard family lawyer. Through her father's network of former students—one of whom happened to be a senior investigator for the Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera (UIF), Mexico's Financial Intelligence Unit—she quietly handed over the audio file along with Diego's firm’s registration details.

Within forty-eight hours, the federal authorities began a covert audit of Ramírez & Associates.

Meanwhile, Diego and Doña Teresa, entirely unaware of the net closing around them, decided to escalate their psychological warfare. They wanted to force Mariana to sign a full post-nuptial agreement that would formally surrender her salary and rights to any joint property.

On a Thursday morning, Mariana arrived at her high school to find the principal’s office occupied. Sitting inside were Diego, Doña Teresa, and a slick, expensive-looking attorney.

The principal, a rigid man named Director Vargas, looked deeply uncomfortable. "Ah, Teacher Mariana, please come in. Your... husband and his legal counsel have brought forward some very serious allegations regarding your conduct outside of school."

Doña Teresa sighed dramatically, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief. "It breaks my heart, Director. Truly. We discovered that Mariana has severe anger management issues. She violently assaulted my son with a deadly weapon during their honeymoon. We have medical reports of his wrist injury."

The attorney slid a folder across the desk. "We are prepared to file criminal charges for domestic violence, Director Vargas. We believe it is highly irresponsible to allow a woman of such volatile and violent character to teach young, impressionable teenagers."

Diego looked at Mariana, a smug, venomous grin playing on his lips. It was the ultimate leverage. Sign the papers, or lose your career, your passion, and your livelihood.

Mariana didn't look at the principal, nor did she look at the attorney. She walked straight up to Doña Teresa and Diego, pulling out a tablet from her bag.

"Director Vargas," Mariana said, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "Before you look at their forged medical reports, I think you should see this."

She tapped the screen. A video began to play. It was a high-definition recording taken from a security camera Mariana had secretly installed in the apartment living room the day she returned from Puebla.

The video showed Diego standing in the living room, screaming at a wall, practicing how he would intimidate Mariana when she came home, shouting: "You're going to give me every cent of your paycheck, you pathetic peasant, or my mother will make sure your father's dojo is burned to the ground!" Following that, the video cut to a clear audio recording of Diego's confession in the apartment about the offshore accounts and his mother's illicit financial dealings.

The attorney's face drained of all color.

Doña Teresa’s jaw dropped, her aristocratic composure shattering instantly. "Where... how did you get that?"

"You thought because I am a physical education teacher, I don't know how security systems work?" Mariana said, her voice razor-sharp. "You thought because my father teaches in a humble dojo, we don't know how to defend against predators?"

Director Vargas stood up, his face red with indignation. "Señor Ramírez, Doña Teresa, I suggest you leave this premises immediately before I call the school security and the police. This is an egregious attempt at extortion."

Diego stood up, his fists clenched, his mind completely unraveling. "You think you won, Mariana?! You think this changes anything? I still have your money! Your savings are gone, mixed into accounts you will never touch! You will still be broke!"

"Actually, Diego," Mariana said smoothly, "I think you should look outside the window."
