Chapter 5 - Unmasking the ViperVivian’s eyes darted wildly around the study before landing on Lorenzo, who stood beside the mahogany desk like an executioner waiting for a signal. She swallowed hard, trying desperately to paste back on the polished, professional mask she had worn for the past year.

“Mr. DeLuca... Lorenzo?” Vivian stammered, her voice pitching up with forced indignation. “What is the meaning of this? Why have your guards dragged me out of my bed in the middle of the night? I demand an explanation!”

Lorenzo didn't move. He didn't raise his voice. He simply pointed one finger toward the plastic evidence bag resting on the center of the desk.

Inside lay the folded paper packet containing the white powder.

Vivian’s gaze dropped to the bag. In a fraction of a second, all the color drained entirely from her face. Her lips parted in a silent gasp, and she staggered backward, bumping hard against the chest of one of the armed guards, who caught her by the shoulder with a brutal grip.

“Recognize it, Vivian?” Lorenzo asked quietly, stepping around the desk and closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides.

“I... I don't know what that is,” Vivian whispered, her voice trembling violently as she avoided his eyes. “It’s some kind of trick! Someone is trying to frame me—maybe... maybe the new housekeeper! Her kid has been running around unsupervised all week, she could have planted anything anywhere!”

“Don't you dare blame my daughter,” Sophia snapped, stepping forward from the shadows of the doorway, her maternal fury finally overriding her fear of the mafia boss. She pointed a shaking finger at Vivian. “I saw you! Emma saw you swapping pillows in the dark! You’ve been poisoning that little boy day after day while pretending to save him!”

“Shut up, you uneducated trash!” Vivian shrieked, her mask finally shattering completely into a mosaic of sheer, panicked hysteria. She lunged forward, thrashing against the guards. “You don't understand anything! That boy was never supposed to recover! If Lucas died under my specialized care, the board was set to liquidate the medical trusts and redirect the regional pharmaceutical shares directly to my syndicate partners in Milan! I was running a controlled clinical degradation!”

The confession spilled out of her like poison from a ruptured vein.

The study fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Marcus and the guards looked down at Vivian with undisguised revulsion. Sophia stared at her in absolute horror, unable to fathom how human greed could sink to such depraved depths.

And Lorenzo DeLuca... Lorenzo simply stopped moving.

His face went completely blank—the terrifying, absolute stillness of a predator that had just cornered its prey. He reached out slowly, taking a heavy brass paperweight off his desk. He didn't yell. He didn't threaten her with graphic violence.

“Milan,” Lorenzo murmured, his voice like the grinding of tectonic plates. “You thought by slowly killing my son under the guise of an incurable illness, you could bleed my holdings dry from the inside out while my attention was divided across the syndicate.”

Vivian sobbed openly now, her knees buckling beneath her as the guards held her up. “Please, Lorenzo... I was just following orders from the higher-ups—!”

“You followed them right into a grave,” Lorenzo interrupted coldly. He tossed the paperweight back onto the desk with a sharp clack. He turned to Marcus. “Take her to the basement holding cell. Strip her of every asset, every encrypted comms device, and every dollar she has stashed offshore. Then contact her handlers in Milan. Tell them the DeLuca dynasty does not negotiate with poisoners—we return the favor.”

“Right away, Boss,” Marcus barked, grabbing Vivian by the arm and hauling her out of the room as she shrieked and begged for mercy. The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off her screams.

When the room fell quiet again, Lorenzo let out a long, slow breath. He turned around, his dark eyes softening as they landed on Sophia and her sleeping daughter. Emma had curled up on the leather sofa, hugging her yellow duck, fast asleep through the entire ordeal.

Lorenzo walked over to the sofa, gently pulling a wool throw blanket over the little girl’s shoulders before turning his gaze back to Sophia.

“You can rest now, Mrs. Carter,” Lorenzo said softly, stepping closer to her. “The poisoner is gone. Tomorrow, the best specialists in Switzerland arrive to begin Lucas’s true recovery. And you and your daughter will never have to worry about a single debt, a single threat, or a single day of hardship for the rest of your lives.”

Sophia looked up into his deep, fathomless eyes, seeing not the terrifying mafia boss the underworld feared, but a grateful father.
