Chapter 5 - Fire and Steel

The attack by the Salvatore loyalists was only the opening salvo in an all-out war for control of the Baltimore waterfront.
Three days after the breach, intelligence gathered by Noah revealed a deeper, more insidious betrayal. The Salvatore family hadn't acted alone. They had been tipped off by someone inside Leo’s inner circle—someone who had access to the port authority encrypted keys and the estate’s security blueprints.
And the trail of financial transfers led straight to an unexpected source: Arthur Sullivan, Mave’s father, who had been secretly selling Rossi logistics data to the rival syndicate in a desperate attempt to regain his lost fortune.
Standing in the subterranean command center beneath the manor, Mave stared at the financial records displayed on the massive computer screens. Her father’s signature was scrawled across the wire transfer receipts like a death warrant.
Leo stood beside her, his hands resting on the edge of the console, his expression like cold marble.
“What do you want to do?” Leo asked quietly, leaving the judgment entirely in her hands. “In our world, treason is punished by death. Even family.”
Mave closed her eyes for a long moment, remembering the years of emotional neglect, the crushing debt, and the way her father and Caroline had treated her like a servant. But beneath the anger, there was only cold, clear resolve.
“He’s not my family anymore,” Mave said, opening her eyes. “He’s a liability. But don’t execute him quietly, Leo. Expose him publicly. Let the federal prosecutors and the rival syndicates watch him fall. Let him lose everything legally, the way he tried to destroy me.”
Leo’s lips curved into a dark, approving smile. “Consider it done.”
The trap was sprung forty-eight hours later at a high-stakes maritime auction downtown.
Surrounded by federal agents, rival capos, and city officials, Arthur Sullivan stepped up to the podium to sign over the remaining rights to the Baltimore harbor docks—rights he had illegally promised to the Salvatore family.
Before the pen touched the paper, the double doors of the auction hall swung open.
Leo Rossi walked in, flanked by his security detail and federal investigators holding federal arrest warrants for racketeering, insider trading, and syndicate collusion.
Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. He looked frantically toward the back of the room, where Mave stood beside Leo, wearing a tailored charcoal coat and an expression of absolute, unshakeable sovereignty.
“Mave!” Arthur cried out, stumbling forward. “Mave, tell them! Tell them this is a mistake! We’re family!”
Mave stopped ten feet away from him, her hands tucked neatly into her pockets.
“You stopped being my family the day you traded my life to pay off your poker debts, Father,” she said, her voice echoing clearly across the silent hall. “Enjoy federal prison. The food is probably better than what you served us at home.”

Federal marshals placed the cuffs on Arthur Sullivan as flashbulbs blinded him. Across the room, Caroline—who had accompanied her father—burst into hysterical tears as she realized her social standing, her money, and her future had vanished into thin air.
Leo stepped up behind Mave, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders as the flashbulbs continued to pop around them.
