Chapter 6 - A Crown of Thorns and Roses

Six months later.
Spring had finally broken over Baltimore, washing the industrial harbor in warm sunlight and blooming cherry blossoms.
Inside the private gardens of the Rossi estate, the air smelled of damp earth and sweet jasmine. The syndicate war was over; the Salvatore family had been dismantled, and the Rossi empire stood stronger, cleaner, and more legitimate than it had in decades.
Mave sat on a wrought-iron bench beneath a blossoming dogwood tree, reviewing export manifests on her tablet while a soft breeze stirred her dark hair.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path.
Leo walked up behind her, no longer wearing the heavy armor of a besieged syndicate boss. He wore a simple black linen shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular, scarred forearms. He leaned over the back of the bench, resting his chin on her shoulder.
“You’re working too hard,” Leo murmured, his breath warm against her ear. “The harbor is running at a hundred percent efficiency. Even the federal auditors gave us a clean bill of health.”
“I’m not working, I’m finalizing the charter for the Mave Rossi Foundation,” she corrected him with a soft smile, turning her head to meet his gaze. “We’re funding vocational training programs and scholarships for displaced young adults in the industrial district.”
Leo’s dark eyes softened, filled with a depth of affection and devotion that only she was privileged to see.
“You took a broken world, Mave, and you turned it into an empire of your own,” he said softly, reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
“I had a good teacher,” she teased, slipping her tablet onto the grass and leaning back into his embrace.
Leo wrapped both arms around her, pulling her close against his chest as the distant sound of the harbor bells chimed across the city. They had started their journey in the shadows of debt, cruelty, and violence—a stain on the upholstery of a high-society world that had wanted to crush them both.
Now, they ruled not by fear, but by an unbreakable bond forged in fire and steel.

Leo pressed a tender, lingering kiss to her temple, whispering the words that sealed their forever.
“The storm is over, my little bird. We finally home.”
