Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap

The morning of the custody hearing arrived with a grim, overcast sky that matched the tension in Clara's stomach. She stood in front of the mirror in her private suite, smoothing down the edges of a high-quality charcoal suit—a gift arranged discreetly by Mrs. Whitaker on Victor's orders, though Clara had insisted on signing a promissory note to pay it back.

Lily was sitting on the edge of the bed, her little legs swinging, her face full of anxiety. "Are you going to win today, Mommy? Are we going to stay in the castle?"

Clara knelt down, taking Lily’s small, warm hands in her own. "We are going to do our absolute best, sweetie. No matter what happens, you and I are a team. Okay? I love you more than all the stars in the sky."

"I love you too, Mommy," Lily whispered, hugging her neck tightly.

A knock at the door interrupted them. Clara opened it to find Victor standing in the hallway, wearing a flawless three-piece suit, his coat folded over his arm.

"The car is waiting downstairs," Victor said, his eyes scanning her professional appearance with approval. "My chief legal counsel, Arthur Vance, is already at the courthouse. He has prepared the filing showing your employment status, your residence, and a comprehensive background check that clears you of every false claim your ex-husband has made."

Clara let out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for two weeks. "Thank you, Victor. I don't know how I'll ever repay you for this."

"Win the case, Clara," Victor said quietly. "That’s repayment enough."

The drive to the Cook County Domestic Relations Courthouse was silent and tense. Victor sat beside her in the back of the armored SUV, his presence a solid, grounding weight. For a man who usually commanded the room, he showed a rare, quiet empathy, allowing her the space to process her fear without offering empty platitudes.

The courthouse halls were crowded and noisy, filled with the low murmur of lawyers and the anxious pacing of families. As they approached Courtroom 402, Clara spotted a familiar, unwelcome figure leaning against the wood-paneled wall.

Derek Bennett looked exactly as he had during their final, bitter months of marriage: polished, handsome in a conventional, salesman-like way, but with a smug, cruel smile that made Clara’s skin crawl. Beside him stood his high-priced attorney, a man known for aggressive, mud-slinging tactics in family court.

"Well, well, Clara," Derek said, stepping into her path, his eyes flicking over her expensive suit with a sneer. "Look at you. Playing dress-up. I heard you managed to land a job babysitting for the Hale family. How long do you think that’s going to last before you break down and quit like you always do?"

Clara stopped, her posture rigid, her chin held high. "I don't quit, Derek. Especially not when it comes to my daughter."

"We’ll see about that," Derek laughed, his gaze shifting past her shoulder. The moment his eyes landed on Victor Hale, the smug smile froze on his face.

Victor stepped forward, his massive frame completely eclipsing Derek. The air around them seemed to drop below freezing. Victor didn't yell; he didn't threaten. He simply looked down at Derek with the detached, absolute disdain a man might show to a bug on his shoe.

"Mr. Bennett," Victor said, his voice a low, smooth purr that carried a terrifying edge. "I am Victor Hale. I believe your legal team has been attempting to contact my childcare agencies and my corporate offices to obtain confidential employment records."

Derek swallowed hard, his confidence visibly evaporating under Victor’s intense stare. "I... we have a right to verify her income for the custody evaluation."

"Any further inquiries regarding Ms. Bennett’s employment will be handled directly through my corporate legal department," Victor stated, stepping closer, forcing Derek to take a clumsy step backward against the wall. "And I should warn you, Mr. Bennett, my attorneys have spent the last forty-eight hours reviewing your personal financial records, including the offshore accounts you hid during your divorce proceedings with Clara. If you proceed with these false allegations today, those records will be turned over to the Internal Revenue Service by noon."

Derek’s face went completely white. His attorney stepped in quickly, his hands raised in a defensive gesture. "Mr. Hale, please. There’s no need for corporate interference in a private family matter."

"Clara Bennett is part of my household," Victor said, his tone final, absolute, and utterly unyielding. "And I protect my household. We'll see you inside."

He turned, placing a gentle hand on the small of Clara’s back, guiding her past her stunned ex-husband and into the courtroom. As the heavy wooden doors swung shut behind them, Clara looked up at Victor, her eyes bright with unshed tears. For the first time in her life, she didn't have to fight the monster alone.
