Chapter 6 - The Feast of the Four Kings

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive tuxedos, and the low, aristocratic hum of Chicago’s high society. The annual Hale Industries Shareholder and Board Gala was the definitive event of the corporate season, and tonight, the stakes were higher than ever. The board vote for the chairmanship was scheduled for midnight.
Victoria Hale stood near the grand ice sculpture in the center of the room, surrounded by a group of conservative board members. She wore a dramatic black velvet gown, a triumphant smile on her face as she checked her watch.
"Victor has completely lost his mind," Victoria whispered loudly to a major shareholder. "He’s bringing that... that woman tonight. And he’s actually brought the children. To a formal corporate gala! It’s an absolute circus. He’s proving everything we’ve said about his lack of judgment."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open, and the master of ceremonies announced: "Chairman Victor Hale and family."
The room went instantly silent. The string orchestra paused mid-measure.
Victor walked into the ballroom, looking every bit the imperial ruler of the Hale empire in a flawless black tuxedo. But he wasn't alone. On his right arm was Clara Bennett. She looked absolutely breathtaking in a simple, elegant emerald-green silk gown that complemented her dark eyes perfectly. Her hair was styled in an elegant, sophisticated updo, and she carried herself with a quiet, regal dignity that left no room for question.
But it was the children who stole the show.
Walking in perfect, orderly unison ahead of them were the four Hale quadruplets, dressed in matching miniature tuxedos with dark green bowties that matched Clara's dress. Behind them, holding Mason's hand, was Lily, wearing a beautiful white dress with a green satin sash.
There was no yelling. No throwing of food. No chaos.
The five children moved through the room with a polite, well-mannered grace that stunned every person in attendance. Mason politely nodded to an elderly board member, while Theo held a small plate of hors d'oeuvres with perfect balance.
Victoria's glass of champagne nearly slipped from her fingers. "No... this is impossible. Those boys are monsters. They should be screaming by now."
Victor led Clara straight toward the center of the room, stopping directly in front of his sister and the gathered board members.
"Good evening, Victoria," Victor said, his voice carrying clearly to the surrounding crowd. "I believe you were concerned about the stability of my household and its impact on the corporate image."
Arthur Sterling, a senior board member who had been wavering on his vote, stepped forward, looking down at the boys in absolute amazement. "Victor... I must say, I’ve never seen the boys so disciplined. They look... remarkable."
"They are remarkable, Arthur," Victor said, looking down at Clara with a warmth that was undeniable. "And that is entirely due to my partner, Clara Bennett. She has brought a structure, a love, and a strength to my home that has transformed all of us. If the board defines 'judgment' by the ability to bring order out of chaos and build a secure, thriving future, then I believe my household is the ultimate proof of that ability."
A murmur of strong approval rippled through the board members. Arthur Sterling smiled, reaching out to shake Victor’s hand. "Well said, Victor. You have my vote. And you have my complete respect, Ms. Bennett."
By midnight, the results were official. Victor Hale was reelected as Chairman of the Board by a landslide victory. Victoria and her faction were completely isolated, their corporate influence permanently broken.
Two weeks later, the kitchen of the Hale estate was filled with a different kind of warmth. The expensive gala gowns and tuxedos were gone, replaced by comfortable sweaters and jeans.
The table was set for six. In the center of the table was a massive, steaming platter of authentic Roman carbonara.
Mason, Cole, Ryder, and Theo sat in their chairs, their faces bright and laughing as they passed the garlic bread to Lily, who was sitting proudly between them. Victor sat at the head of the table, his arm wrapped gently around Clara’s waist as she poured the fresh Parmesan cheese over the pasta.
"You know the secret now, right?" Theo asked Lily, leaning in close with a conspiratorial whisper.
"What secret?" Lily asked, her eyes wide.
"You can't rush it," Mason announced proudly, beating his brother to the punch. "If you rush, the eggs scramble. If you're patient, it turns into silk."

Clara looked up, her eyes meeting Victor’s. The man who had conquered boardrooms and empires looked down at her with a love that was absolute, complete, and permanent. The storm had brought her to his doors, a broke stranger looking for a lifeline. But tonight, as she looked around the table at the laughing children and the man who held her heart, she knew she wasn't a stranger anymore.
She was home. And the carbonara was perfect.
