Chapter 2 - The Coming StormDays blurred into a grueling cycle of physical exhaustion and quiet defiance. While Mrs. Gable escalated her demands, pushing Clara to scrub carpets on her knees and haul heavy winter drapes despite her mounting physical distress, Clara’s secret sanctuary remained Room 4B.

Every evening after the main estate staff had retreated to their quarters, Clara would slip upstairs with fresh food, warm clothes, and her small red notebook where she practiced names and future plans for baby Lily.

She read to Giovanni from poetry books she borrowed from the estate's library. She brushed his silver hair until it gleamed, and she talked to him about her fears—her debt, her loneliness, her terror of giving birth alone in a world that offered no safety nets.

"You're listening better than anyone else in this house, John," she whispered one night, adjusting his pillows. "Tomorrow, Lorenzo Moretti arrives. Everyone is terrified of him. The cooks are shaking, Mrs. Gable is practically foaming at the mouth with panic, and even the senior guards are walking on eggshells."

Giovanni’s eyes locked onto hers. Deep within those faded blue depths, a sharp, piercing intelligence flared like a struck match. He couldn't speak, but his gaze conveyed a clear, unmistakable message: Do not fear him. He is my blood.

"I just hope he doesn't clean house and fire everyone," Clara sighed, standing up and stretching her aching back. "I need this job, John. I need to save enough for Lily’s crib."

The next morning, the winter storm broke with biblical fury. A massive blizzard swept down from the mountains, burying Briar Glen beneath three feet of drifting snow, howling against the massive glass windows of the Moretti estate like a pack of starving wolves.

Inside the mansion, the air was thick with tension. At precisely 10:00 AM, the heavy oak front doors flew open, and a blast of freezing wind rushed into the grand foyer.

Black armored SUVs had breached the gates.

Stepping out of the lead vehicle and into the hall was Lorenzo Moretti.

At thirty-two years old, Lorenzo had inherited his father’s vast criminal and commercial empire. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal overcoat, his dark hair damp from the snow, his sharp, angular jawline set in a permanent, ruthless expression. Four heavily armed security guards flanked him, their movements synchronized and lethal.

The entire estate staff lined up in the foyer, standing at rigid attention. Mrs. Gable stood at the front, her hands clasped nervously in front of her apron, wearing a wide, sycophantic smile.

"Mr. Moretti," Mrs. Gable purred, stepping forward. "Welcome home, sir. We are honored. The estate is fully prepared for your inspection."

Lorenzo didn't look at her. His dark, piercing eyes swept over the assembled staff like a physical scan. "My father?" he asked, his voice a low, resonant baritone that echoed off the marble walls.

"He is doing wonderfully, sir," Mrs. Gable lied smoothly, her smile never wavering. "We treat him like a king. He receives the absolute highest standard of care, specialized meals, and constant medical supervision."

Standing near the back of the line, half-hidden behind a towering grandfather clock, Clara nearly choked on the sheer audacity of the lie. She gripped her apron to keep her hands from shaking.

Lorenzo narrowed his eyes slightly, sensing something beneath the polished surface of the greeting. But he nodded curtly. "Good. I’ll see him later. I have business in my study."

With that, Lorenzo swept past them, disappearing down the corridor toward his private wing accompanied by his chief enforcer.

The moment he was out of sight, Mrs. Gable spun around, her sweet facade vanishing instantly, replaced by her usual venom. "You heard him! Back to work! Clara, stop standing there like a statue! The west wing corridors are tracked with snow—get your bucket and scrub them before I dock your pay!"

Clara bit her lip, blinking back hot tears of frustration. She turned toward the supply closet, her lower back throbbing with a sharp, warning pain. She had spent the last two hours on her hands and knees washing the mudroom, and now her body was screaming for rest.

She grabbed a bucket, filled it with hot water and heavy-duty industrial cleaner, and dragged it toward the west wing. As she knelt down, dipping her rag into the sudsy water, a dark shadow fell over her.

She looked up.

Standing before her was one of Lorenzo’s personal bodyguards—a massive man with a scarred jaw and cold, dead eyes named Viktor.

"You're the new girl," Viktor stated, his voice flat.

"Yes," Clara whispered, pulling herself up slightly.

"Mr. Moretti doesn't like dirt near his study," Viktor said, pointing a heavy boot at a small puddle of melted snow near the baseboard. "Fix it. Now."

Before Clara could reply, Viktor turned and walked away.

Clara squeezed her eyes shut, a wave of dizziness washing over her. She pressed a hand against her stomach, whispering a silent prayer to her unborn child. Just hold on, Lily. We’re going to get through this.

What Clara didn't know was that upstairs, sitting silently in his wheelchair by the window of Room 4B, Giovanni Moretti had been watching the foyer through the security monitor feed linked directly to his room.

He had seen Mrs. Gable’s lies. He had seen the way Viktor spoke to Clara.

And as he looked at the grainy screen showing the young, pregnant girl struggling on her knees against the cold marble floor, the sleeping dragon inside the former Don finally awoke.
