Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the StudyThe knock on the door of Room 4B was sharp and authoritative.

Clara jumped, pulling her hand away from Giovanni’s grip. She wiped her eyes quickly, standing up and smoothing down her apron. The door swung open, and Viktor, the massive bodyguard, stood in the threshold.
"Clara Vance?" Viktor demanded.
"Y-yes?" Clara stammered, her heart leaping into her throat.
"Mr. Moretti wants to see you in his study. Now."
Fear paralyzed her for a second. Had Mrs. Gable caught her bringing up extra food? Had she broken some obscure estate rule?
She looked back at Giovanni. The old man was staring at Viktor with a look of such concentrated, murderous fury that Clara was startled. Giovanni’s hands gripped the armrests of his wheelchair so hard his knuckles turned white.
"Go," Giovanni’s eyes seemed to urge her. Do not be afraid. Stand tall.
"I'll be right back, John," Clara whispered, stepping past Viktor into the dark hallway.
She was escorted down the grand staircase and through the cavernous corridors toward the master wing. As she approached Lorenzo’s study, she saw Mrs. Gable standing outside the heavy double doors, looking pale, frantic, and sweating despite the chill in the air.
"What is the meaning of this?" Mrs. Gable hissed as Clara approached. "Did you steal something, you little thief? Did you ruin my kitchen inventory?"
"I didn't steal anything," Clara said defensively.
Before Gable could respond, the heavy study door swung open, and Marcus stepped out. "Mr. Moretti will see you both now. Inside."
Clara stepped into the sprawling, mahogany-paneled study. The air smelled of expensive leather, cigar smoke, and old paper. Lorenzo Moretti sat behind a massive oak desk, a single desk lamp illuminating his chiseled, terrifyingly calm face.
Beside him on the desk sat an open ledger and a stack of printed bank statements.
"Sit down, Mrs. Gable," Lorenzo said, his voice deceptively soft. "Clara, stand wherever you like."
Mrs. Gable immediately dropped into a leather armchair, her hands trembling violently. "Mr. Moretti, I don't know what kind of lies you've been told, but I have dedicated twenty-five years of my life to this family—"
"Quiet, Helen," Lorenzo interrupted, the use of her first name making her flinch.
Lorenzo leaned back, lacing his fingers together. He looked across the desk at Clara, studying her pale face, the dark circles under her eyes, and the quiet dignity with which she held herself despite her trembling knees.
"Clara Vance," Lorenzo said, his voice cutting through the silence. "Tell me about my father's room."
Clara froze. Her eyes darted to Mrs. Gable, whose face had drained of all color.
"I... I don't know what you mean, sir," Clara lied, terrified of the consequences.
"Look at me, Clara," Lorenzo commanded, not unkindly, but with absolute authority. "You are six months pregnant, working fourteen-hour days on wages that barely cover your rent, and yet every single night you climb the stairs to Room 4B with hot food, warm blankets, and medicine. Why?"
Clara swallowed hard. She looked at Mrs. Gable, who was glaring at her with venomous hatred. Then she thought of Giovanni—his lonely eyes, the fire she built for him, the tear he shed when she promised to protect her own daughter.
"Because nobody else cared," Clara said, her voice shaking slightly at first, then growing stronger. "Because he’s a human being, Mr. Moretti. He was freezing. He was eating cold garbage. And no matter what mistakes a person made in their past, nobody deserves to be treated like trash and left to rot in the dark."
The study fell utterly silent.
Mrs. Gable let out a harsh, hysterical laugh. "She’s lying! She’s trying to cover up her own incompetence! She’s a thief and a squatter—"
"Shut. Up." Lorenzo didn't shout, but the absolute lethality in his voice made Mrs. Gable snap her jaw shut so fast her teeth clicked.
Lorenzo slid the thick leather folder across the desk. It landed right in front of Mrs. Gable.
"Four million, two hundred thousand dollars," Lorenzo said coldly. "That is how much you embezzled from my father's estate accounts while he sat paralyzed upstairs, unable to speak, relying on you for basic survival."
Mrs. Gable’s eyes bulged. She stared at the ledger, her face turning the color of curdled milk. "That... that's a forgery! You can't prove—"
"Marcus has your digital signature, your offshore routing numbers, and the signed confession of your co-conspirator who was arrested three hours ago in Atlanta," Lorenzo interrupted smoothly. He stood up from his desk, walking slowly around the mahogany surface until he towered over her shaking chair.
"You stole from my family," Lorenzo whispered, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "You abused the staff. And worst of all... you tortured a defenseless old man who could not fight back."
"Mr. Moretti, please!" Gable shrieked, sliding out of her chair and throwing herself onto the Persian rug, grabbing at the hem of his trousers. "Have mercy! I’ll give it all back! I’ll—"
"Viktor," Lorenzo said without looking back.
The massive bodyguard stepped out from the shadows near the door.
"Take her to the basement holding cells," Lorenzo ordered flatly. "Contact federal authorities in the morning for corporate embezzlement, financial fraud, and elder abuse. Make sure she spends every remaining year of her life behind bars."
"No! No, please!" Gable screamed as Viktor hauled her up by her arms, dragging her kicking and clawing out of the study. The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off her hysterical cries.
Clara stood frozen near the desk, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Her legs felt weak. She expected to be next—after all, she had broken rules, brought unauthorized food upstairs, and defied the head housekeeper daily.

Lorenzo turned around, sliding his hands into his trouser pockets. He walked slowly toward Clara, stopping just a few feet away.
Up close, his presence was staggering. But as he looked down at her, the harshness in his eyes melted into something entirely unexpected: profound, unwavering respect.
