Chapter 2 - Unearthing the Roots of Deception

By 3:00 a.m. on Christmas Morning, the Major Crimes unit was humming with activity. While the rest of the city slept beneath a blanket of holiday peace, my team was buried under a mountain of financial records, corporate filings, and the terrifying footage retrieved from the brass angel on the mantel.

I sat in the observation room, staring through the two-way mirror at Eric, who was sweating under the harsh fluorescent lights of Interrogation Room B. He had refused to speak without an attorney, but his body language spoke volumes. He was twitching, tapping his fingers frantically against the metal table, completely unaware that his world was about to collapse on a macro scale.

Marcus Vance, my lead forensic financial analyst, walked into the room, holding a thick stack of printed ledgers. His expression was grim.

"It's significantly worse than we anticipated, Claire," Marcus said, laying the documents out on the desk.

The Debt: Eric’s luxury logistics firm was a hollow shell. He had lost over $2.6 million in unauthorized offshore commercial real estate speculation over the last year.

The Motive: He owed substantial amounts to high-interest private lenders—people who don't use court orders to collect their money.

The Target: Our mother’s ancestral estate and her $1.5 million retirement trust were his final lifeline to avoid total financial execution.

"Look at these transfers," Marcus pointed to a highlighted column of numbers. "Vanessa opened a fraudulent power of attorney account using a forged medical assessment form three months ago. They have been systematically draining Eleanor’s liquid assets to pay off the monthly interest on Eric's personal debts. But it wasn't enough. The lenders demanded the deed to the property as collateral by the end of the year."

I leaned forward, my eyes narrowing as I scanned the forged medical document. It bore the signature of Dr. Julian Sterling, a physician who had been stripped of his medical license in two neighboring states for falsifying cognitive evaluations for corrupt estate executors.

"They didn't just want the house, Marcus," I whispered, the realization hitting me with sickening clarity. "They needed Mom declared legally incompetent or dead before the annual audit of the trust in January. If she died of exposure on Christmas Eve, Eric would automatically inherit the remainder of the estate as the sole surviving trustee on the local registry, bypassing probate entirely."

The door to the observation room opened, and Detective Ramirez stepped in, holding a tablet. "Claire, the hospital just sent over the preliminary toxicology report for your mother. Dr. Patel found high traces of a long-acting sedative in her bloodstream. It’s the same medication Dr. Sterling frequently prescribes to simulate symptoms of advanced dementia."

My blood turned to absolute ice. They hadn't just locked her out in the cold; they had chemically restrained her, systematically poisoned her, and staged a scene to make the world believe a senile old woman had simply wandered out into a blizzard and succumbed to the elements.

"Get the District Attorney on the phone," I ordered Ramirez, my voice dropping into a register that made him step back. "Upgrade the charges from domestic assault and forgery. I want Eric and Vanessa charged with attempted capital murder, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and felony elder abuse. We are going to bury them."
