Chapter 3 - The Bail Hearing and the Counter-Attack

The County Courthouse was cold and cavernous on the morning of December 26th. The holiday decorations in the lobby felt like a mockery of the grim reality taking place inside Arraignment Courtroom 4. Eric and Vanessa stood behind the defense podium, flanked by Arthur Sterling, a high-priced, notoriously ruthless defense attorney whom Eric’s remaining business associates had hired to protect their own interests.

Vanessa had spent the last twenty-four hours in a standard holding cell, and it showed. Her expensive makeup was smudged, her hair was disheveled, and the entitlement that had defined her demeanor on Christmas Eve had turned into a desperate, feral panic. Eric looked hollowed out, his eyes fixed on the floor, avoiding my gaze as I sat in the front row of the gallery beside Marcus Vance.

"Your Honor," Attorney Sterling argued, his voice booming through the microphone. "My clients are upstanding members of the business community. The allegations brought forth by the defendant's sister—who clearly possesses a deep-seated personal vendetta—are wildly exaggerated. The surveillance footage retrieved was an illegal invasion of marital privacy, obtained without a warrant in a residential property where my clients held a valid, notarized deed of ownership."

The judge, a formidable woman named Honorable Martha Judge, adjusted her glasses, looking down at the defense table with an unreadable expression. "And what says the state?"

The Assistant District Attorney, Sarah Jenkins, stood up, smoothing down her blazer. She didn't look at Sterling. She simply walked up to the presentation screen and loaded the digital file containing the state’s counter-evidence.

"Your Honor, the state submits that the property deed in question was executed through a known fugitive notary currently under indictment for international document forgery. Furthermore, we submit the certified medical toxicology reports from St. Jude’s Hospital, proving the victim was systematically poisoned with non-prescribed sedatives to induce a state of physical helplessness."

Sarah clicked to the next slide, displaying the high-definition video captured by the brass angel. The audio filled the courtroom—Vanessa’s laughter, Eric’s cold declaration to “let the old woman freeze,” and the clear video of Eric striking our mother across the face when she tried to reach for the telephone.

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Several journalists in the back rows began typing furiously on their tablets.

"Given the extraordinary severity of the charges," Sarah Jenkins continued, her voice rising with righteous authority, "and the manifest danger the defendants pose to the primary witness, the state requests that bail be denied entirely, and both defendants be held in maximum security pending trial."

Attorney Sterling tried to object, his voice rising in desperation. "Your Honor! This is a standard property dispute! Denying bail is unprecedented for individuals with no prior criminal record!"

"Silence, Mr. Sterling," Judge Judge snapped, her gavel coming down with a sound like a thunderclap.

"I have rarely witnessed an act of such calculated, sub-human cruelty presented in this courtroom. The defendants did not merely attempt to execute a financial transaction; they attempted to systematically erase a human life for the price of a real estate asset. Bail is denied for both defendants. They will remain in custody until the conclusion of these proceedings."

As the court officers stepped forward to lead them away, Vanessa lost all control. She turned toward me, her face contorting into a mask of pure fury. "You bitch! You ruined our lives! You won't get away with this! Eric did it! It was all Eric’s idea!"

Eric didn't look back at her. He didn't look at me. He allowed himself to be dragged through the heavy steel side doors, his shoulders slumped, his empire turned to absolute dust in less than forty-eight hours.
