Chapter 4 - The Cabin in the Snow

The forest was a maze of towering black pines, snow-covered boulders, and howling wind that tore the breath from my lungs.

My sneakers sank deep into the snow drifts with every step, the ice soaking through my socks, but I kept my eyes fixed on Daniel’s dark jacket fifty yards ahead.

Up ahead, situated in a clearing surrounded by jagged limestone rocks, sat the old hunting cabin.

A single yellow light flickered inside the front window, casting long, eerie shadows across the snow.

The heavy wooden front door of the cabin hung wide open, its brass lock shattered by a gunshot.

I reached the edge of the clearing just as Daniel reached the cabin's wooden porch steps.

"DANIEL, WAIT!" I screamed over the roar of the wind.

Inside the cabin, a table was overturned. Glass jars of preserved food lay shattered on the floorboards.

Standing beside an old iron wood stove, wearing a heavy canvas hunting coat and holding a silver 9mm pistol in his right hand, was Richard Pierce.

He turned toward the open doorway, his face illuminated by the harsh glare of a battery-powered lantern sitting on the counter.

He looked unhinged. His silver hair was matted with melting snow, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and frantic, like an animal caught in a steel trap.

"Get back, Daniel!" Richard yelled, raising the gun, his hand shaking violently. "Get out of here!"

Daniel didn't stop. He stepped up onto the porch, walking straight into the cabin, his arms held wide, his face a mask of absolute, fearless fury.

"Put the gun down, Dad," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm, echoing off the wooden rafters.

"Don't come any closer!" Richard shrieked, backing against the counter, his knuckles white against the grip of the pistol. "You don't understand what you've done! That prosecutor... the state investigators... they were going to freeze all my assets on Monday! I worked thirty years for that money! IT'S MY ESTATE!"

I stepped into the cabin doorway, pressing my back against the doorframe, my heart hammering like a trapped bird.

Richard’s eyes snapped to me. The hatred in his face was pure poison.

"You..." Richard spat, pointing the gun barrel directly at my chest. "This is your doing, Maya! You brought this ruin into my family! If you had just let me take Emma to the cabin... if you had just signed those trustee papers like a good daughter-in-law..."

"You tried to ruin my daughter's face!" I yelled back, stepping forward, ignoring the gun pointed at my heart. "You put industrial lye into a nine-year-old child's Christmas gift! You are a monster, Richard!"

"I put a mild solution in that jar!" Richard lied, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "It was supposed to cause a rash! A simple allergic reaction! Just enough to prove you were negligent... just enough to show the court you put toxic cosmetic products near her skin!"

"A rash?" Daniel roared, taking a massive step forward, closing the distance between them. "She has second-degree chemical burns across her entire face, Dad! She’s sitting in a pediatric trauma unit right now because of you!"

Richard blinked, a tiny micro-expression of shock flickering across his face before his cold, narcissistic pride closed over it like armor.

"She'll heal!" Richard snapped callously. "She's young! She'll get over it! But my trust... my legacy..."

"You have no legacy, Dad," Daniel said softly, stepping directly into the line of fire, placing his own chest two inches from the muzzle of Richard's gun. "You have an orange jumpsuit and a federal prison cell waiting for you."

Richard's jaw twitched. "Step back, Daniel. I swear to God, I will pull this trigger."

"No, you won't," Daniel said, staring straight into his father's crazy eyes. "Because you're a coward, Richard. You only attack nine-year-old girls with chemical jars when their backs are turned. You don't have the guts to look a man in the eye and shoot him."

Richard’s fingers trembled against the trigger. The madness in his eyes clashed with sudden, overwhelming fear.

Far off in the forest, the loud, rhythmic thudding of a police helicopter's rotor blades began to shake the trees, accompanied by the bright, piercing beams of spotlights sweeping across the snowy canopy outside.

"POLICE! SURROUND THE CABIN! DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!" a voice boomed through a bullhorn from the sky above.

Richard looked toward the window, panic completely overwhelming him.

In that fraction of a second when his focus shifted, Daniel struck.

Daniel lunged forward, his left hand grabbing the barrel of the pistol and shoving it up toward the ceiling while his right fist struck Richard cleanly across the jaw.

BANG!

A gunshot exploded into the wooden rafters, showering sawdust over the room.

Richard let out a pathetic groan as Daniel slammed him against the counter, wrenching the heavy silver pistol from his hand and tossing it across the floorboards.

I sprinted across the room, kicking the gun beneath the heavy iron stove.

Daniel pinned his father face-down on the cold floorboards, pulling Richard's arms roughly behind his back, holding him down with his full weight.

Richard wept into the dust, his face pressed against the wood. "Daniel... please... I'm your father... don't let them take me..."

Daniel leaned down close to his father's ear, his voice dripping with icy, absolute finality.

"You ceased being my father," Daniel whispered, "the second my daughter screamed."

Officer Lawson and four heavily armed State Troopers burst through the broken cabin door, their tactical lights illuminating the scene in blinding white light.

"CLEAR!" Lawson shouted, stepping forward and clicking heavy steel handcuffs over Richard Pierce’s wrists. "Got him! Suspect in custody!"

As the troopers dragged the sobbing, defeated old man out into the blizzard toward the waiting police vehicles, Daniel stood up slowly.

He looked at me across the dimly lit room.

I ran into his arms, wrapping my coat around him, pressing my face against his neck as the nightmare finally began to break.
