Chapter 5 - The Truth Exposed

Three days later.
The private consultation room on the third floor of the St. Jude's Pediatric Burn Center was quiet, filled with the soft glow of winter morning sunshine streaming through the blinds.
Sitting at a small conference table were Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance, Officer Lawson, Daniel, and me.
On the table lay a mountain of legal evidence:
The forensic report proving Richard Pierce’s fingerprints were present on both the glass cream jar and the industrial lye bottle.
The recorded phone conversations retrieved from the secret safe in our guest room.
The forged guardianship papers signed by the corrupt probate notary, who had been arrested forty-eight hours prior.
And the financial audit showing Richard had embezzled over two hundred thousand dollars from his late wife’s estate before attempting to liquidate Emma’s trust.
ADA Marcus Vance closed the thick blue case file with a heavy, satisfying thud.
"Mr. and Mrs. Pierce," Marcus said, looking at us with profound respect. "I wanted to brief you personally before we enter the formal grand jury indictment this afternoon."
"What are the official charges?" I asked, holding Daniel's hand tightly beneath the table.
"Richard Pierce is being charged with Attempted Kidnapping, First-Degree Aggravated Assault with a Corrosive Substance, Felony Child Abuse, Grand Larceny, Forgery, and Wire Fraud," Marcus listed off cleanly. "Given the overwhelming physical evidence, his written receipts, and the recorded phone calls, we are pursuing the maximum statutory penalties on every single count."
"Is there any possibility of bail?" Daniel asked, his voice firm.
"None," Marcus assured him instantly. "The judge signed a permanent detention order yesterday. Richard Pierce will remain in maximum-security county custody until his trial. Given his age and the severity of these federal and state charges, he will spend the rest of his natural life behind bars."
"What about his legal accomplice?" I inquired. "The man on the phone recording?"
"Arthur Pendelton, the corrupt estate attorney who assisted Richard in drafting the fraudulent guardianship petition, was arrested yesterday morning," Officer Lawson added with a satisfied nod. "The State Bar Association has already stripped his license, and he is facing fifteen years in state prison for conspiracy to commit grand fraud."
A soft knock sounded at the consultation door.
Dr. Aris Thorne, the chief pediatric burn specialist, stepped into the room holding a clipboard, a warm, reassuring smile on her face.
"Maya, Daniel," Dr. Thorne said gently. "I have wonderful news. We just completed Emma’s morning dressing change and skin evaluation."
Daniel and I stood up instantly from our chairs. "How is she, Doctor?"
"Her skin’s response to the specialized neutralizing ointment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been extraordinary," Dr. Thorne reported, showing us the latest digital scans on her tablet. "Because Maya washed her face so quickly with cold water on Christmas morning, the chemical damage was confined entirely to the topmost epidermal layer."
I let out a shaky breath, tears of immense relief brimming in my eyes.
"There will be no deep scarring," Dr. Thorne confirmed with deep warmth in her voice. "The minor redness along her cheeks will completely fade over the next few weeks with standard topical care. She is going to make a full, complete recovery."
Daniel pulled me into a tight embrace, burying his face in my hair as we wept together—tears of sheer, overwhelming joy and relief.

"Can we see her?" I asked, wiping my cheeks.
"She’s sitting up in bed right now," Dr. Thorne smiled. "And she’s demanding to know when she can eat chocolate chip pancakes."
