Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence and ShardsThe mahogany table didn't just overturn; it launched into the air with the violent grace of a tectonic shift.

Ceramic coffee mugs shattered against the hardwood floor like small arms fire. Expensive imported sugar bowls and porcelain plates fractured into a mosaic of shards, spraying milk and sugar across the pristine white baseboards. The handwritten rules, the cousin’s notebook, and the uncle's folder vanished into a chaotic tornado of loose leaf paper, fluttering through the morning sunlight like wounded white birds.
For one breathless, suspended second, the entire room stopped breathing.
Veronica Vale stood frozen where she had just dropped the torn pieces of our wedding portrait. Her mouth was open in a silent, jagged O of sheer disbelief, her manicured fingers still hovering mid-air. One of the cousins shrieked, scrambling backward so hard her chair flipped over, sending her sprawling onto the rug.
Then came the silence. A heavy, suffocating silence broken only by the steady drip of spilled French-press coffee rolling off the edge of the rug.
“You...” Veronica finally hissed, her voice trembling with an incandescent, toxic rage as she pointed a shaking finger at my chest. “You absolute lunatic! You feral, ungrateful little gutter-rat!”
I didn’t flinch. I stood tall, my hands still resting on the ruined edge of the fallen table, my chest rising and falling in steady, controlled rhythms. The cold, clear rush of adrenaline singing through my veins felt better than any coffee.
Across the room, Adrian finally snapped out of his paralysis.
His face had drained of every drop of color, leaving him looking like a ghost haunting his own dining room. He didn’t run to comfort his mother. Instead, he took two terrified steps forward, his eyes wide and glazed with absolute horror.
“Mom...” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking violently.
Veronica whipped her head around, expecting her son to finally grow a spine and defend her honor against the unhinged bride. “Adrian! Call the police! Have this unhinged woman dragged out of her own—out of your house! She has lost her mind!”
Adrian didn’t move toward her. He looked past his mother, his gaze fixed on the shredded pieces of our wedding photograph scattered beside her polished loafers, and then up at me. A tremor shook his entire body.
Then, louder, his voice pitching into a tone of pure, unadulterated panic that made the rest of the visiting relatives freeze:
“Mom, do you know who she is?”
Veronica scoffed, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. “She’s some nobody you picked up from a downtown café! Some pathetic nobody you rescued from an ordinary life!”
May you like
Adrian let out a choked, humorless laugh that sounded more like a sob. He shook his head slowly, backing away from his mother as if she had suddenly turned into a stranger.
“No,” Adrian breathed, staring at his family with eyes wide open for the first time in his life. “No, Mom... you just declared war on the majority shareholder of Vale Global Industries.”
