Chapter 5 - The Boardroom CoupThe executive boardroom of Vale Global Industries on the fiftieth floor was packed to maximum capacity.

When the double doors swung open and Adrian and I walked in side by side, a collective hush fell over the twenty-odd vice presidents, regional directors, and legacy board members seated around the massive glass table.

For years, this room had been run like an old-boys club, heavily influenced by Veronica’s behind-the-scenes whispering campaign. Today, the energy in the room was entirely different.

I took the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the CEO or the majority stakeholder. Adrian sat immediately to my right, holding a sleek black tablet loaded with corporate restructuring manifests.

“Good morning, everyone,” I announced, my voice carrying crisp and clear through the acoustically engineered room.

Several older board members exchanged uneasy glances. Arthur Sterling, the senior vice president of operations and a longtime crony of Veronica, cleared his throat loudly.

“Excuse me, Ms. Vance,” Arthur drawled, leaning back in his leather chair with a condescending smirk. “While we recognize your firm’s financial stake in this company, operational decisions of this magnitude usually require a formal review committee. You can’t simply waltz in here and—”

I didn't let him finish. I raised one finger, and Daniel dropped a thick manila folder right in front of Arthur’s coffee cup.

“You might want to review page four before you finish that sentence, Arthur,” I said smoothly.

Arthur frowned, flipping open the folder. As his eyes scanned the first paragraph—detailing unauthorized real estate kickbacks, shell company invoices, and ghost-employee payrolls funneled through his nephew’s consulting firm—the smug smirk melted off his face as if it had been painted on wax.

The color drained from his skin. He looked up at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“This... this is an invasion of privacy,” Arthur stammered, looking around the table for allies who were suddenly very interested in studying their notebooks.

“This is an internal fraud audit,” I corrected coldly, resting both hands flat on the glass table and leaning forward. “Effective immediately, Arthur Sterling is suspended without pay, pending federal indictment for corporate embezzlement and wire fraud. Security is waiting outside to escort him from the building.”

Before Arthur could even protest, two quiet, sharp-suited corporate security guards stepped into the boardroom, placing their hands firmly on the back of his chair.

As Arthur was hauled out of the room in stunned, humiliating silence, I looked around the remaining board members, whose spines had suddenly straightened into steel rods.

“Let’s make one thing exceptionally clear,” I said, my gaze sweeping across the room. “The era of entitlement, family cronyism, and secret backroom deals at Vale Global is officially over. From this day forward, we operate on transparency, merit, and strict fiscal accountability. If anyone has a problem with that model, your resignation letters can be submitted to HR by noon.”

Not a single person spoke. Not a single hand was raised in dissent.

Adrian looked at me from the side, a proud, undeniable smile breaking across his face.
