PART 6: A Harvest of Joy

One Year Later.

The sun shone brightly over the same glass pavilion by the lake, but today, there was no drama, no secrets, and no shadow of illness. The air smelled of fresh jasmine, sweet summer rain, and the laughter of close friends.

We were celebrating our first wedding anniversary, combined with a fundraiser gala for the newly restructured Mercer Foundation. Over the past twelve months, under our leadership, the charity had recovered every single dollar Vivian had stolen from the offshore accounts, successfully distributing it to pediatric cancer wards across the country.

Vivian was currently serving a fifteen-year sentence in a federal correctional facility, her name scrubbed from every building and plaque in the city.

I stood by the entrance of the pavilion, wearing a beautiful emerald green evening gown. My hair had grown back—not the long locks I had before, but a thick, chic, beautiful pixie cut that framing my face perfectly. I didn't need a wig anymore. I was proud of every single strand of hair, a physical reminder of the battle I had fought and won.

Ethan walked up behind me, sliding his arms around my waist and pulling me back against his warm chest. He kissed my neck, his breath warm against my skin.

"You look absolutely breathtaking, Mrs. Mercer," he whispered.

"I feel breathtaking," I smiled, turning around in his arms to face him. "Look at this room, Ethan. Look at what we built from the ashes."

The pavilion was filled with hundreds of doctors, researchers, and families of survivors, all raising their glasses to a future filled with hope.

Ethan lifted his glass, his eyes locking onto mine with the same deep, unwavering devotion he had shown at the altar when I was bald and broken. "To my beautiful wife. The woman who taught a whole family how to be brave."

I clinked my glass against his, looking out over the water as the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and pink. Vivian had tried to use my darkest moment to destroy me, but in doing so, she had only forced me to discover my own light. The trap she had set for me had ended up catching her instead, leaving Ethan and me free to walk into a long, healthy, and beautiful forever together.
