Chapter 3 - THE UNRAVELING OF ASHLEY THORNE

While the financial freeze sent Jared and Dwight’s world into an immediate tailspin, I turned my attention to the third person who had stood in my house, smiled in my face, and helped orchestrate my destruction.
Ashley Thorne worked as a Senior Marketing Director at a prestigious public relations firm in downtown Baltimore. Her entire life was built on her image—her curated social media presence, her high-profile corporate clients, and her self-proclaimed status as an advocate for women in business.
Two days after the court hearing, Christopher and I sat in the executive conference room of Thorne & Associates Public Relations.
Across the wide glass table sat Ashley, flanked by her HR director and the firm’s managing partner, Marcus Sterling. Ashley was wearing a sharp cream-colored suit, holding a cup of herbal tea, trying desperately to project cold indifference, though her knuckles were white as she held the ceramic handle.
"Elizabeth," Ashley said softly, offering a artificial, sad smile. "I understand you’re going through a traumatic divorce, but bringing your legal personal drama into my place of employment is completely inappropriate."
"Miss Thorne," Christopher interjected smoothly, pulling a thick packet of legal documents from his briefcase and sliding three copies across the mahogany table. "We are not here regarding a personal drama. We are here to serve a civil subpoena for an active lawsuit involving Corporate Espionage, Civil Conspiracy, and Tortious Interference."
Marcus Sterling, the managing partner, picked up the packet, his brows furrowing as he scanned the cover page. "What is the meaning of this?"
"Two weeks ago," Christopher explained, pointing to a highlighted section of the document, "Miss Thorne used her company-issued laptop and credentials to access a secure private server holding Elizabeth Vance’s personal estate records. She then transferred those confidential estate documents directly to Dwight Vance to facilitate the unauthorized transfer of funds."
Ashley’s teacup rattled against its saucer. "That’s a lie! I never—"
"We have the IP routing logs, Ashley," I said, speaking directly to her for the first time. My voice was calm, measured, and entirely free of the pain she expected to hear. "You logged into my grandmother's trust portal using the guest access code you stole off my kitchen counter during my bridal shower."
Ashley looked frantically at her managing partner. "Marcus, she’s trying to ruin my reputation! She’s bitter because her marriage failed!"
"Marcus," Christopher continued, unbothered by her outburst, "Miss Thorne also listed Thorne & Associates as a financial reference on the fraudulent mortgage application for the Towson property—falsely claiming that Elizabeth Vance was an independent contractor for this firm whose income could be garnished in case of default."
Marcus Sterling set the papers down carefully. He turned his head and looked at Ashley. The warmth in his eyes had completely vanished.
"Ashley," Marcus said, his voice flat. "Did you use company property and company credentials to forge a financial reference for a personal mortgage scheme?"
"Marcus, listen to me—" Ashley stammered, her voice rising in pitch.
"Hand over your keycard and your phone," Marcus commanded quietly. "Right now."
"Marcus, please!" Ashley gasped, tears finally springing into her eyes as her carefully constructed corporate mask fell apart. "It was Dwight! He convinced me to help him! He said Elizabeth was unstable and that her family money was being wasted!"
"HR will escort you from the building immediately, Miss Thorne," Marcus said, standing up and refusing to even look at her as she burst into hysterical tears. "Your employment is terminated for gross ethical violations, misuse of corporate assets, and potential criminal liability. Our legal team will cooperate fully with Mrs. Vance's attorneys."

I stood up, closing my buttoned blazer, looking down at the woman who had helped put bruises on my face and ruin my wedding day.
"You wanted my life, Ashley," I whispered as the security guards stepped into the room to escort her out. "Now you can have what's left of it."
