Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE AT THE BALTIMORE APARTMENT

With their bank accounts frozen and their corporate front collapsing under the weight of federal wire fraud investigations, the Vance family began to turn on each other like cornered animals.
Jared’s commercial construction company was forced to halt work on three major sites due to the inability to pay sub-contractors. The bank began initial foreclosure proceedings on the family’s luxury apartment in Baltimore—the very apartment where Susan had handed me the “Duties of the Daughter-in-Law” sheet.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when I returned to the family apartment, accompanied by Christopher, two uniformed Baltimore City Sheriff’s deputies, and a professional moving crew. Under the court's temporary possession order, I had been granted three hours to retrieve every item of personal property, furniture, and wedding gifts that had been purchased with my money.
When the sheriff knocked on the heavy oak door, it was unlocked by Susan Vance.
The woman who had walked into my bedroom four days ago with a flawless smile and a list of chores looked completely unraveled. Her hair was unwashed, her eyes were bloodshot, and she was wearing a faded housecoat.
Behind her, in the living room, Jared sat on the sofa surrounded by opened letters, legal notices, and unpaid bills. Dwight was sitting at the dining table, staring blankly at a cold cup of coffee.
"What is this?!" Susan shrieked as the sheriffs stepped over the threshold. "You have no right to be in my home!"
"Mrs. Vance," the lead sheriff replied, holding up a certified court inventory order. "We are here to oversee the recovery of personal property belonging exclusively to Elizabeth Vance. Stand back and do not interfere."
The movers stepped past her, carrying large wooden crates and packing boxes.
I walked quietly into the living room.
Jared stood up, his face contorting into rage. "You ruined us, you ungrateful little bitch! You froze my business! My workers walked off the job this morning! My reputation in this city is destroyed!"
"You destroyed your own reputation, Jared," I said, stopping five feet away from him, protected by the sheriff standing right beside me. "You thought you could assault a woman in her own home, steal her inheritance, and force her into domestic servitude because you had a big voice and a fragile ego."
"I was trying to keep this family together!" Susan yelled, her voice breaking into a shriek. "A wife is supposed to serve her husband! A daughter-in-law is supposed to respect her elders! We gave you a family!"
"You gave me a list of chores and an emergency room bill," I corrected her coldly.
I turned to look at Dwight. He had not said a single word since we walked in. He sat at the glass table—the very table where I had smashed the corner with a metal pipe days ago, now patched with ugly silver duct tape.
"Dwight," I said softly.
He looked up at me, his eyes hollow, dark circles dragging down his pale skin. "Elizabeth... please. Talk to me without the cops. Without the lawyers. I made a terrible mistake. Ashley manipulated me—"
"Ashley lost her job yesterday, Dwight," I cut him off. "And she turned over every text message, every voice note, and every email you ever sent her to the Commonwealth Prosecutor's office in exchange for a misdemeanor plea deal."
Dwight’s jaw dropped. "She... she what?"
"She gave them the wire transfer records," I continued, watching his last thread of hope snap right in front of me. "She gave them the audio recordings where you and your father discussed how to hide your business tax debts inside my grandmother's trust. The federal prosecutor is filing formal indictments for felony conspiracy tomorrow morning."
Jared gasped, his hands flying to his chest as he sank back onto the sofa, grabbing his left arm. "Dwight... what is she talking about? What wire transfer records?!"
"He didn't tell you, Jared?" I smiled—a cold, genuine smile. "Dwight didn't just plan to pay off your tax debts. He diverted thirty thousand dollars of your remaining business credit into a private offshore account in the Caymans under his and Ashley’s names two days before the wedding. He was planning to leave you and Susan with the tax debt as soon as he got my money."
Jared whipped his head toward his son, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. "You did WHAT?!"
"Dad, listen to me!" Dwight scrambled backward out of his chair as Jared lunged across the glass table, grabbing his own son by his shirt collar.
"You stole from ME?!" Jared roared, raising his fist—the same fist he had used on my face days ago—and slamming it into Dwight’s jaw, knocking him onto the carpet.
"Sheriff," I said calmly, stepping backward toward the front door as the movers carried the last of my boxes out into the hallway. "I believe they are violating their own peace now."

The sheriffs immediately stepped in, wrestling Jared to the floor and pinning his arms behind his back as Susan screamed hysterically and Dwight lay weeping on the floor, holding his bloody mouth.
I picked up my purse, adjusted my coat, and walked out into the corridor, leaving the Vance family to tear each other apart in the ruins of their own greed.
