Chapter 2 - The Lion’s Den

The alley was suffocatingly quiet, save for the patter of rain and the heavy, ragged breathing of four armed men.

Dominic Vance took two slow, heavy steps forward. The cold, unyielding mob boss who had commanded a ballroom of hundreds three hours ago now looked like a man who had been struck by lightning.

"Daddy..." a tiny, trembling voice whimpered from beneath Eleanor’s sweater.

Dominic dropped to one knee right there in the rain-soaked dirt of the alley. His gun clattered to the asphalt, ignored. His broad, calloused hands—hands that had signed execution orders and billion-dollar deals—reached out with heartbreaking hesitation, as if terrified the child was a ghost that would vanish if touched.

"Lily... my baby girl," Dominic whispered, his baritone voice cracking completely.

The little girl reached out her small arm from Eleanor's coat. Dominic gathered his daughter into his massive chest, pulling her so tight against his heart that his shoulders shook with silent, overwhelming sobs.

Eleanor stood frozen against the brick wall, her arms still raised defensively, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Nikolai, the chief bodyguard, stepped up beside Dominic, his weapon lowered, pointing a tactical flashlight into the trash compound.

"Boss," Nikolai said, his voice grim. "She was buried under the commercial waste. If this woman hadn't come out to dump the bins..." He didn't finish the sentence. Hypothermia and suffocation would have taken the child within twenty minutes.

Dominic buried his face in Lily’s dark hair, breathing in her scent, before slowly standing up. He held his four-year-old daughter securely against his chest with one arm, shielding her from the rain with his heavy leather coat.

Then, he turned his gray eyes onto Eleanor.

The warmth that had briefly touched his face vanished, replaced by an intense, penetrating scrutiny that made Eleanor’s knees tremble.

"Who are you?" Dominic asked softly.

"Eleanor... Eleanor Hayes," she stammered, clutching her bare, shivering arms in the freezing wind. "I... I work for the catering company. I was just taking out the grease bins..."

Dominic looked at her bare shoulders, then at the woolen sweater wrapped securely around his daughter. He looked at Eleanor’s mud-stained trousers, where she had knelt in the dirt to cradled the child.

"You took off your own clothes to warm her," Dominic stated. It wasn't a question.

"She was freezing," Eleanor said simply, her voice steadying despite her fear. "She was terrified and bleeding. Any mother would have done the same."

Dominic stared at her for a long, silent moment.

"Nikolai," Dominic commanded, his voice dropping back into its firm, absolute register. "Clear the perimeter. Find the traitors who facilitated the breach at the south gate. I want every man on shift tonight brought to the basement."

"Yes, Boss."

Dominic turned back to Eleanor. "You're coming with me."

Panic flared in Eleanor's chest. "Sir, please... I have a daughter at home. She’s sixteen, she’s alone, and today was... today was her father's memorial. I need to go home."

Dominic didn't argue. He simply looked down at little Lily.

The moment Eleanor stepped back toward the street, Lily let out a sharp, terrified scream, her small hands reaching wildly for Eleanor's apron.

"No! No! Pretty lady! Don't go!" Lily cried, hysterical tears spilling over her bruised cheeks. She writhed in Dominic's arms, refusing to settle, her heart rate spiking dangerously as she hyperventilated. "Don't leave me in the dark! Pretty lady!"

Dominic tried to soothe her, but the trauma of whatever ordeal the child had endured over the last six hours was too profound. Lily refused to look at her father's guards, screaming in panic whenever Eleanor moved out of sight.

Dominic looked at Eleanor, his expression unreadable.

"Your daughter," Dominic said smoothly. "Where does she live?"

"Elm Street," Eleanor whispered. "Number 412."

Dominic looked at Nikolai. "Send two units to Elm Street. Bring the girl to the Vance Estate. Tell her her mother is safe and under my personal protection."

"Wait! No!" Eleanor cried out. "You can't just abduct my daughter!"

Dominic stepped closer to Eleanor. Standing at his full height, he towered over her, radiating a terrifying, unshakeable power. Yet when he spoke, his voice was surprisingly controlled.

"Mrs. Hayes," Dominic said, looking into her eyes. "Six hours ago, my daughter was taken from her nursery inside this fortress by men who intended to murder her and dump her body to force me into a war. You saved her life. But until I know who in my inner circle sold out my family, this entire estate—and anyone who touched my daughter tonight—is in extreme danger."

He gestured toward the dark forest surrounding the property.

"If my enemies know you found her, you and your daughter will be hunted before sunrise," Dominic continued. "You are not my prisoner, Eleanor. But you are under my roof. And as long as you are under my roof, no power on earth can touch you."

Without waiting for an answer, Dominic turned and carried Lily through the private security doors into the main mansion.

Eleanor stood in the rain for three seconds, looking at the dark alley, then at the little girl looking back over Dominic’s shoulder, holding out a tiny, pleading hand.

Eleanor took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and followed the mafia boss into the lion's den.
