Chapter 4 - Shadows and Ambush

Three weeks passed.
The Vance Estate had transformed from a cold, silent fortress into a place filled with life, warmth, and steady routines.
Eleanor had officially assumed her role as head of the household. She managed the estate staff with gentle efficiency, replaced the cold, sterile decor with warm tones, fresh flowers, and home-cooked meals that smelled of cinnamon and baked bread.
Little Lily had blossomed under Eleanor’s care. The nightmares that had plagued the four-year-old slowed to a halt. Every morning, Lily would sit on Eleanor's lap in the sunny breakfast nook, eating pancakes and babbling happily about her drawings.
Ava, too, had begun to change.
Initially rebellious and suspicious of Dominic's wealth and reputation, Ava's defenses had slowly crumbled. Dominic had arranged for top tutors to prepare her for college, bought her a brand-new laptop, and never once treated her like an outsider. More importantly, Dominic’s head bodyguard, Nikolai—a former tactical officer—had taken time to teach Ava basic self-defense in the estate gym, giving the grieving girl a sense of control she hadn't felt since her father died.
One cold Thursday evening, Dominic returned to the estate late from a meeting downtown.
He walked into the warm kitchen, finding Eleanor sitting at the large oak island, reviewing the estate’s weekly budget ledgers. She wore a simple dark blue dress, her hair pinned up loosely, looking serene and stunning in the soft yellow light of the hanging lamps.
Dominic poured himself two fingers of scotch, leaning against the counter beside her.
"You're working late," he said softly.
"Just finishing the staff payroll," Eleanor replied, offering him a warm smile. She pointed to a plate covered in foil on the counter. "There's roasted chicken and potatoes left over. Mrs. Gable made it, but I saved a plate for you."
Dominic looked at the plate, then at Eleanor. A gentle, rare smile relaxed his harsh features.
"Thank you, Eleanor," he murmured.
For the past three weeks, an undeniable, electric connection had been growing between them. It was built not on fast passion, but on deep, mutual respect, shared grief, and a quiet, unshakeable trust. Dominic—a man who had spent a decade isolated by power and danger—found himself looking forward to coming home just to hear Eleanor's voice. And Eleanor—a woman who had been broken by fear and debt—felt safer in Dominic's presence than she ever had in her life.
Dominic reached out, his broad, warm hand gently resting over Eleanor's hand on the counter.
Eleanor didn't pull away. She looked up, meeting his storm-gray eyes, her breath catching softly.
"Dominic..." she whispered.
"You brought light back into this house, Eleanor," Dominic said, his baritone voice thick with raw emotion. "I don't think I ever told you... how much that means to me."
Before Eleanor could answer, the estate’s emergency klaxons shrieked through the house!
WURRRR! WURRRR! WURRRR!
Red tactical lights flashed across the ceiling!
The kitchen door burst open. Nikolai sprinted inside, holding an assault rifle, his face grim.
"BOSS! CODE RED!" Nikolai bellowed. "Rostov's men bypassed the outer gate! They used heavy explosives on the transformer station—the main power grid is down!"
BOOM!
A thunderous explosion shook the entire east wing of the mansion! Dust and plaster rained down from the ceiling as glass shattered in the grand hallway!
"Eleanor! Get the children to the safe room!" Dominic commanded, pulling a heavy matte-black pistol from his shoulder holster in one fluid motion.
"Dominic, no!" Eleanor cried out.
"Go! NOW!" Dominic ordered, his gray eyes flashing with lethal fury.
Eleanor sprinted out of the kitchen, taking the stairs three at a time toward the nursery wing.
The second-floor hallway was filled with thick white smoke and flashing red lights. Gunfire erupted from the main staircase—TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK!—as Dominic’s security team engaged the invading hitmen.
Eleanor slammed open the nursery door.
Ava was already there, holding little Lily tightly in her arms, her face pale but determined.
"Mom!" Ava shouted over the noise of gunfire. "The elevator isn't working!"
"The panic room behind the library bookshelf!" Eleanor yelled, grabbing Lily into her arms and holding Ava’s hand tightly. "Move! Fast!"
They scrambled down the private rear corridor toward the library.
Suddenly, a heavy wooden door at the end of the hall exploded inward.
Two large men in dark tactical gear, carrying submachine guns and wearing gas masks, stepped through the smoke!
It was Thomas Rostov's elite strike force.
"There's the kid!" one of the hitmen barked in a thick Russian accent, raising his weapon toward Eleanor and the children!
"NO!" Ava screamed, lunging forward and shoving a heavy brass floor lamp directly into the lead hitman’s knees!
The man stumbled, his gun discharging a wild burst into the ceiling!
"Run!" Eleanor shouted, shoving Ava behind her, shielding Lily with her entire body as she kicked the second hitman violently in the shins with her hard-soled shoes!
The hitman cursed, grabbing Eleanor by her collar and throwing her hard against the library wall! Eleanor hit the mahogany paneling, gasping as pain flared in her shoulder, but she refused to drop Lily.
The hitman raised his pistol, aiming directly at Eleanor's head. "End of the line, lady—"
THWIP! THWIP!
Two silenced shots tore through the air.
The hitman’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed onto the carpet. The first hitman turned, but a dark shadow stepped out of the smoke.
Dominic Vance didn't hesitate. He grabbed the remaining attacker by his collar, slammed him violently over the library balcony railing, and dispatched him before he hit the marble floor below.
Dominic rushed across the room, dropping to his knees beside Eleanor.
"Eleanor! Are you hurt?!" Dominic demanded, his hands framing her face, his eyes wild with terror and rage.
Eleanor looked up, coughing through the smoke, holding a crying Lily against her chest. "We're okay... Ava saved us... we're okay."
Dominic looked at Ava, who was standing tall, holding a broken chair leg, her face smeared with soot but her eyes shining with courage.
Dominic reached out, grabbing Ava’s shoulder with fierce pride. "Good job, kid."

He turned back to Eleanor, leaning down and pressing a hard, desperate kiss against her forehead.
"Nikolai!" Dominic roared into his shoulder radio. "Lock down the safe room! I'm ending Thomas Rostov tonight!"
