Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirror and the Cold GripThe sound of shattering glass tore through the lobby of the Ashworth Grand before anyone had time to pretend they had not been watching. Dela Marsh hit the mirror with one hand first, the heavy silvered surface splintering outward in a bright, violent web. Her other hand clamped around her belly, instinctively shielding the five-month pregnancy she had fought so desperately to protect against the daily cruelties of her life.

Cordelia Vance stood over her in a red silk gown that reeked of expensive perfume and untouchable privilege. Her fingers were still tangled in the ends of Dela’s hair.

"This is what happens when staff forget their place," Cordelia snapped, her voice carrying across the silent, paralyzed lobby. "She spilled wine on me and then got dramatic."

Dela doubled over, breathing through the sudden, blinding flash of pain and terror. "My baby," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the hum of the crystal chandeliers.

Across the vast lobby, Royce Callaway rose from his table near the private bar. He wore a dark suit, no tie, and an expression of cold, absolute focus. He moved without haste, his long strides eating up the distance until he stood directly behind Cordelia.

Without a word, Royce’s large, calloused hand clamped around Cordelia’s wrist. He didn't squeeze with rage; he applied a measured, crushing pressure that made the socialite gasp and drop her hand from Dela's hair.

"Mr. Callaway—" Cordelia began, her voice pitching upward in sudden panic as she recognized the dark ink of the tattoo climbing the side of his neck and the dead-eyed stillness that accompanied his name. "She ruined my dress! She’s just a maid, she—"

"She is not a maid in this room anymore," Royce interrupted. His voice was low, gravelly, and entirely devoid of human warmth. It cut through the lobby like a razor.

Royce released Cordelia’s wrist with a look of utter disgust, turning his attention downward. He knelt beside Dela, ignoring the red wine and broken glass. His eyes caught the old, faded scar running along her forearm—a stark reminder of a past she thought she had buried deep in the city's underbelly.

"Can you stand?" he asked, his tone shifting by a fraction, becoming intensely personal in a way that made the surrounding guests step back.

Dela looked up, her breath hitching as she recognized the man who owned the shadows of the city. "Royce..."

"I've got you," he murmured.

With effortless strength, Royce scooped Dela into his arms, lifting her away from the shattered glass and the weeping socialite. As he carried her toward the private elevator bank, he glanced back at the trembling Ashworth manager.

"Lock down the building," Royce instructed coldly. "Nobody leaves until the security drives are copied. Every single frame of what happened here tonight is going to be played in a courtroom before sunrise."
