Chapter 3 - The Destruction of Cordelia VanceBy morning, the digital front pages of Chicago’s financial and social journals were locked in a feeding frenzy that had nothing to do with charity galas or high-society weddings.

ASHWORTH GRAND LUXURY SUITE INVESTIGATED FOR ASSAULT. VANCE HOLDINGS FACES SUDDEN MUNICIPAL AUDIT FOLLOWING HOTEL INCIDENT.
Inside the glass-walled boardroom of Vance Holdings, Arthur Vance—Cordelia’s father and a titan of city real estate—pales as he stared at the red-blinking terminal on his desk. Within twelve hours, three major institutional investors had pulled their capital. Two zoning permits for his downtown development projects had been inexplicably frozen by the city zoning board. And a federal tax inquiry had just landed on his desk regarding offshore accounts he thought were entirely invisible.
The heavy mahogany doors swung open without a knock.
Royce Callaway walked in, flanked by two silent men in charcoal suits. He didn't wait for an invitation; he walked straight to the head of the long glass table, pulling out a chair and sitting down with casual, predatory grace.
"Mr. Callaway," Arthur choked out, rising halfway from his seat before his knees betrayed him. "This... this is an outrage! My lawyers are already preparing an injunction against your holding company for market manipulation! You can't just freeze our credit lines over a barroom brawl!"
"It wasn't a barroom brawl, Arthur," Royce said, his voice dangerously smooth. "It was an assault on private property inside a building where I hold the master mortgage. And more importantly—it was an assault on my wife."
Arthur’s mouth dropped open. "Your... your wife? That waitress is—"
"The mother of my child," Royce finished, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the glass table. The air in the room instantly dropped twenty degrees. "Your daughter decided to break a mirror over her spine because she was having a bad evening. So I decided to break your corporate empire because I'm having a worse one."

"Name your terms," Arthur whispered, all the color draining from his face as he realized the absolute trap he had walked into. "Financial compensation? Public apologies? What do you want?"
"I want Cordelia in the grand lobby of the Ashworth Grand at noon today," Royce said softly. "Kneeling on the exact same marble floor where she pushed Dela. Reading a full confession into every microphone in the city. And after that? You and your family leave Illinois before sunset, or the next audit won't just inspect your bank accounts—it will inspect your prison sentences."
