Chapter 4 - The Public StageThe Michigan Avenue wing of the Art Institute was deafening. Flashbulbs went off in blinding bursts against the marble arches, casting harsh white light across the framed canvas resting on an easel behind bulletproof glass.

Sadie stood behind a mahogany podium, her fingers gripping the polished wood to keep her slight limp from being obvious to the dozen news cameras lined up along the back wall. She wore the cream cashmere sweater and a sharp black blazer, her dark hair pinned back impeccably. Her pale face held no trace of the terror she had felt sixteen hours earlier in a rain-soaked alley.

"The paper analysis," Sadie said into the array of microphones, her voice clear, precise, and carrying the unshakeable authority of a world-class scholar, "confirms the presence of lead-tin yellow and copper resinate pigments consistent with Caravaggio’s Roman period between 1599 and 1602. The stroke analysis shows the characteristic left-handed bravura of the master."

A reporter raised his hand. "Ms. Miller! There are rumors that rival collectors attempted to buy this piece off-market before the auction! Is it true there were threats made against the authentication team?"

Sadie’s eyes swept across the crowded gallery.

In the back row, standing quietly beside a stone pillar in a dark charcoal suit, was Callum Russo. He looked cold, imposing, and utterly magnificent. His gray eyes were locked onto her, watching her handle the wolves of the press with the same quiet dominance he brought to the underworld.

Beside him, looking visibly pale and sweating under his collar, was Don Carmine Moretti, flanked by two lawyers. Callum had forced the old man to attend the announcement—a public humiliation that demonstrated to the entire city who really held the power.

Sadie looked back at the reporter, her expression hardening into absolute steel.

"This sketch," Sadie said clearly, her voice echoing off the high marble ceilings, "belongs to the public record now. It has been documented, cataloged, and protected by the Russo Cultural Foundation. Anyone attempting to alter its provenance or intimidate its custodians is wasting their time."

She looked directly at Moretti as she finished the sentence. The old mobster’s jaw twitched, his eyes burning with deep, hateful fury, but he couldn't say a word. The cameras were rolling.

Callum raised his glass of water slightly toward her in a silent toast.

An hour later, the press had been ushered out to the main lobby for drinks, leaving the private gallery relatively quiet. Sadie stepped down from the podium, leaning slightly against the velvet rope surrounding the easel. Her leg was throbbing again, the effort of standing for two hours taking its toll.

A heavy shadow fell across her.

She turned to find Callum standing beside her, a glass of sparkling water in his hand.

"That was a brilliant performance," Callum murmured, his voice low enough that only she could hear. "You looked like a queen delivering an edict."

"I felt like a target," she replied softly, though a faint smile touched her lips. "Did it work?"

"Moretti’s bank accounts were frozen an hour ago by the State Attorney’s office," Callum said, taking a step closer, his broad shoulder blocking her from the remaining guests in the room. "The public exposure of the sketch triggered an audit into his holding companies. He’s finished, Sadie. By midnight, his own lieutenants will strip him of his title to save themselves."

Sadie let out a long, slow breath, feeling a massive weight slide off her shoulders. She looked up at him, her gray eyes shining under the gallery spotlights. "So... I’m safe?"

Callum didn't answer immediately. His eyes dropped to her lips, then moved back up to meet her gaze.

"You were safe the moment you stepped into my car last night, Sadie," he said softly. "The rest of this was just making sure the world understood that touching you carries a death sentence."

"Callum," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she reached out, her fingers resting against the lapel of his coat, feeling the warm, steady beat of his heart beneath the fine wool. "Lev told me... he said you’ve been protecting me for three years. Hiding my contracts. Keeping me separate."

Callum’s expression softened, the cold marble mask slipping away to reveal the fierce, vulnerable emotion underneath.

"I tried to keep you out of the mud, Sadie," he admitted, his large hand coming up to gently cup her cheek, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone. "I knew what I was. I knew the darkness that follows my name. I thought that if I kept you at arm's length, I could enjoy your intellect, your spirit, your beauty... without dragging you into my hell."

"And now?" she asked, leaning into his touch, her heart hammering against her ribs.

May you like

"Now," Callum said, his voice thick with emotion, "I realize that you were never meant to be hidden. You belong beside me. If you’ll have me."

Before she could answer, a sudden commotion erupted near the gallery’s side entrance.
