Chapter 6 - The Canvas of TomorrowOne year later.

The summer sun flooded the glass-walled studio at the Lake Forest estate, casting golden light across hundreds of framed paintings, antique manuscripts, and rows of restoration equipment.
Sadie sat at a broad oak desk, wearing a simple linen dress, her hair swept up in a loose bun. She was carefully applying a fine coat of varnish to a small 17th-century Dutch landscape, her hand steady, precise, and completely free of tremor.
Her leg had healed perfectly, leaving only a faint, thin white line along her calf—a subtle souvenir of the night her life had changed forever.
The heavy oak door of the studio clicked open.
Callum walked in, wearing a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, free of coats or holsters. His left shoulder moved effortlessly, fully restored after months of physical therapy that Sadie had personally supervised.
He walked over to her desk, setting down a tray with two iced teas and a bowl of fresh peaches from the estate garden.
"How is the Vermeer coming?" Callum asked, leaning over her shoulder and pressing a gentle kiss to the side of her neck, his broad arms wrapping around her waist from behind.
"It's not a Vermeer," Sadie said with a soft laugh, leaning her head back against his chest, filling her lungs with his scent of cedar and warm sunshine. "It's a Fabritius. But it's magnificent."
"If you say it's magnificent, it is," Callum murmured, his chin resting on her head.
The past year had seen a complete transformation of the Russo family operations. Under Sadie’s influence, Callum had systematically divested from the high-risk, violent gray-market trade, funneling his massive capital into legitimate international art logistics, historic preservation trusts, and museum acquisition funds.
Don Moretti was serving a thirty-year sentence in a federal penitentiary. The street violence that had once plagued the shipping districts had dissolved into a quiet, prosperous peace enforced by Callum’s unshakeable authority.
"Lev said the shipping container from Florence arrived at the harbor this morning," Sadie said, turning in his arms to face him. "The Botticelli drawings are inside."
"I know," Callum smiled, his gray eyes soft with an intense, quiet happiness that he had never known before she walked into his life. "I went down to inspect them myself. I made sure the climate controls were set to your exact specifications."
"You went to the docks yourself?" she asked, raising an eyebrow playfully. "The great Callum Russo, doing logistics?"
"I do whatever my Chief Curator commands," Callum purred, leaning down to capture her lips in a slow, deep kiss that made her breath hitch just as it had on the night they met.
Sadie wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, feeling the deep, unbreakable strength of the man who had sheltered her from the storm, fought for her honor, and built a brand-new world where she could shine without fear.
When they finally broke apart, Callum reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.
Sadie froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Callum..."
He opened the box to reveal a breathtaking ring—a rare, deep green emerald surrounded by a halo of antique diamonds, set in oxidized silver that looked like a piece of Renaissance art.
"You authenticated my life, Sadie," Callum said softly, his voice thick with raw, unvarnished devotion as he slipped the ring onto her finger. "Now let me give you my future."
Sadie looked at the ring, then up into the gray eyes of the man who had become her shelter, her partner, and her love.

"It's authentic, Mr. Russo," Sadie whispered, a brilliant, tearful smile illuminating her face as she pulled him back down for another kiss. "100% real."
Outside the studio windows, the sun sparkled over the endless blue expanse of Lake Michigan, illuminating a home that was no longer a fortress of shadows, but a sanctuary of light, art, and an everlasting love.
