Chapter 4 - Siege at the Stone FortressThe sound of shattering glass echoed from the lower gallery as the heavy oak doors of the estate’s ground-floor foyer gave way under the impact of a battering ram.

Vincent didn't panic.

His movements became terrifyingly efficient, shifting instantly from a composed host into a seasoned military strategist. He turned to Evelyn, grabbing her by the shoulders and locking his dark eyes onto hers.

"Listen to me," Vincent said, his voice absolute and unyielding. "They are coming through the main foyer and the western terrace. You are going to take the data card, grab the backup drive, and head down to the reinforced panic room behind the wine cellar."

"I'm not leaving you here!" Evelyn protested, her heart hammering against her ribs. "There are dozens of them, Vincent! They're heavily armed!"

"And this house is built to withstand a siege," he replied, pulling a heavy steel-framed key ring from his pocket and pressing it into her palm. "I have men stationed at the perimeter gates, and our secondary response team is five minutes out. My only job tonight is making sure you and that data card survive."

He reached behind his back, unbuckling a sleek leather shoulder holster containing a suppressed semi-automatic pistol, and checked the magazine before sliding it across the desk toward her.

"Do you know how to shoot?"

Evelyn stared at the weapon, then looked up into his fierce, unwavering eyes. "My father took me to shooting ranges in upstate New York every summer until I was sixteen."

"Good," Vincent said, a grim, approving smile touching his lips. "Keep the safety on until you have no other choice."

Before Evelyn could argue further, the sound of heavy boots stampeding up the grand staircase outside the study doors shattered the air.

"They're on the second floor!" Evelyn gasped.

Vincent spun around, drawing his own weapon as the heavy oak doors of the study shuddered under a massive, violent kick. The lock splintered, and the door burst inward.

Two armed men in tactical gear wearing Crown Shield Security patches rushed through the threshold, weapons raised.

Vincent moved with breathtaking speed. Two shots echoed through the study—clean, precise, and devastating. Both men dropped instantly, neutralizing the breach before they could even squeeze their own triggers.

"Go!" Vincent shouted, grabbing Evelyn by the arm and shoving her toward a concealed sliding panel hidden behind a bookshelf on the far side of the room. "The tunnel leads down to the garage vault! Do not stop for anything!"

Evelyn clutched the data card in her hand, the heavy pistol gripped tightly in the other. She slipped through the narrow panel just as a burst of automatic gunfire peppered the exterior wall of the study, showering the room in splinters of wood and plaster.

"Vincent!" she screamed over the deafening noise.

"Go, Evelyn!" his voice boomed back over the gunfire. "I'll be right behind you!"

The concealed panel slid shut with a heavy, metallic click, plunging her into darkness.

Using the flashlight app on her phone, Evelyn navigated the narrow, subterranean concrete corridor that sloped steeply downward beneath the estate. Her bare feet—protected now by thick wool socks she had slipped on earlier—scrambled against the damp floor as the distant sounds of gunfire, shouting explosions echoed through the structural walls of the house above her.

She reached the bottom of the corridor, pushing open a heavy fire door that led directly into Vincent’s underground wine cellar.

Rows upon rows of priceless vintage bottles lined the stone walls, illuminated by dim, amber security lights. But as she rushed toward the exit leading to the garage, a dark shadow detached itself from behind a massive oak wine rack.

Mason Pike stepped into the light.

He was holding a heavy tactical shotgun, his face bruised, his breathing ragged, and a triumphant, sadistic grin plastered across his features.

"Well, well, well," Mason mocked, raising the barrel of the shotgun directly toward her chest. "Looks like you took the wrong turn down the rabbit hole, Ms. Carter."

Evelyn froze. Her breath caught in her throat. She slowly raised her right hand, bringing the suppressed pistol up from her side.

Mason laughed, stepping closer. "You really think a little art conservator is going to shoot me? Put the gun down, girl, and hand over the data card before I blow you across this wine cellar."

Evelyn’s hands trembled, but as she looked down the barrel of Mason’s shotgun, a strange, ice-cold calm washed over her. She remembered her father’s voice echoing from the shooting ranges years ago: Breathe out. Focus on the target. Don't let fear pull your trigger.

She didn't hesitate.

She exhaled slowly, squeezed the grip, and fired.
