Chapter 5 - The Fire and the TruthThe deafening roar of the gunshot echoed off the stone walls of the wine cellar like rolling thunder.

Mason Pike cried out as the bullet grazed his shoulder, his shotgun discharging harmlessly into the wooden ceiling overhead, sending a shower of plaster and dust raining down upon the vintage wine racks. Before he could recover, Evelyn pumped her grip and raised the pistol again, stepping forward with an absolute, unyielding fury that caught the security manager completely off guard.

"Stay back!" she shouted, her voice echoing with a raw, dangerous authority she didn't know she possessed.

Mason stumbled backward against a rack of Bordeaux, clutching his bleeding shoulder with a look of absolute shock. Before he could lunge forward again, the heavy iron cellar doors at the far end of the room burst open with a deafening crash.

Vincent stood in the doorway.

His suit jacket was torn at the shoulder, a shallow graze marked his left temple, and his dark eyes burned with an incandescent rage. He took one look at Mason bleeding on the floor and Evelyn standing firm with her weapon raised, and the tension in his shoulders instantly melted into overwhelming relief.

"Are you hurt?" Vincent asked, closing the distance between them in three long strides.

"I'm fine," Evelyn breathed, lowering the pistol with a shaking hand. "He... he was waiting for me."

Vincent didn't look at Mason. He kept his eyes locked on Evelyn, reaching out to gently cup her face with his warm, steady hand. "You were incredible."

Behind them, the distant wail of police sirens began echoing up through the winding mountain roads—not local city cops easily bought off by Winthrop Holdings, but federal state troopers and investigative units summoned by Sal Moretti and Vincent’s outer perimeter teams.

Mason Pike groaned from the floor, spitting blood onto the stone tiles. "You think... you think arresting me stops anything?" Mason wheezed, laughing weakly. "The data card... the copies... they were already uploaded automatically to our primary servers in Zurich twenty minutes ago. Winthrop Holdings is too big to fail, Moretti. You can't burn down an empire."

Vincent slowly turned his head to look down at Mason. His expression wasn't angry anymore. It was chillingly, terrifyingly calm.

"You're right, Mason," Vincent said softly. "You can't burn down an empire with a single match."

He pulled a secure satellite phone from his pocket, pressing a single speed-dial button.

"Sal? Execute Protocol Alpha across all federal and international channels. Release the entire Project Meridian file to the Department of Justice, the SEC, and every major news outlet on the Eastern Seaboard."

On the floor, Mason’s triumphant grin vanished instantly. "No... you didn't."

"I told you," Vincent replied, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal whisper. "I don't just protect people. When someone threatens what is mine... I burn their world down to the bedrock."

Within seconds, the cell phones of every corrupt official, corporate executive, and syndicate boss across Grayhaven began buzzing simultaneously as the encrypted firewall burst open across the global internet, unleashing a tidal wave of indictments, asset freezes, and federal warrants that would dismantle Winthrop Holdings before the sun rose over the bay.
