Chapter 4 - Betrayal at the GateThe storm outside intensified as night fell over Lake Forest. Sheets of freezing rain lashed against the windows, mixed with heavy gusts of wind that shook the tall pine trees surrounding the estate.

Inside the manor, the atmosphere was deadly silent.

Norah sat in the nursery, holding Leo tightly against her chest, listening to the muffled commands being issued throughout the house. Gabriel had ordered the staff to shelter in the reinforced basement, while thirty of his best men took up defensive positions along the perimeter walls.

Thomas—the man who had sworn to love and protect her—had sold her out. He was bringing killers to her doorstep, willing to sacrifice her and his own son just to save his skin. The realization burned inside her chest like acid.

The door to the nursery opened softly, and Gabriel stepped inside. He was no longer wearing his fine wool suit. He wore a dark tactical vest over a black shirt, a sidearm holstered securely at his chest.

Despite his lethal appearance, his eyes were soft as he looked at Norah.

"Is everything ready?" Norah asked, her voice trembling despite her efforts to stay brave.

"The south gate has been prepped," Gabriel said, stepping closer. "We know they are coming. Thomas gave them the override code, thinking he was clever. He doesn't know I changed the secondary security protocols two days ago. They are walking directly into an ambush."

Norah looked up at him, her eyes wide with fear. "Please... be careful, Gabriel."

Gabriel reached out, cupping her cheek with his hand. His touch was warm against her cold skin. "They will not breach this house, Norah. I give you my word. No harm will come to you or Leo while I draw breath."

He hesitated for a second, then leaned down, pressing a firm, gentle kiss against her forehead. The gesture was so tender, so fiercely protective, that tears welled in Norah’s eyes.

"Stay here with Mrs. Doyle," Gabriel commanded softly. "Lock the door behind me."

He turned and walked out, the heavy wooden door clicking shut behind him.

At 1:15 AM, the silence of the night was shattered by the sharp, echoing crack of gunfire near the south gardens.

Below in the courtyard, bright muzzle flashes illuminated the freezing rain. Valenti’s men, believing they were launching a surprise attack through the compromised gate, found themselves trapped in a crossfire between Gabriel’s snipers on the roof and his ground team concealed in the perimeter trees.

Inside the main entrance of the house, Gabriel stood near the high marble archway, firing with calm, lethal precision. Beside him, Dante directed the men, driving Valenti’s forces back toward the driveways.

Suddenly, a side door leading from the greenhouse was kicked open with a loud bang.

A wet, disheveled man slipped inside, panting heavily, holding a silver revolver in his shaking hands. He was covered in mud, his clothes soaked, his face pale with frantic terror.

It was Thomas Bennett.

"Norah!" Thomas yelled, his voice echoing frantically in the foyer. "Norah, where are you?!"

Gabriel turned, his weapon raised, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the man from the surveillance photographs. "Thomas Bennett."

Thomas whirled around, pointing his shaky gun at Gabriel. "You! You're Moretti! Where is my wife?! Where is the kid?!"

"You sold them to Valenti," Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly low frequency as he stepped forward slowly, ignoring the gun pointed at his chest. "You led killers to the house where your infant son was sleeping."

"I had no choice!" Thomas screamed, his eyes darting wildly around the grand entrance. "They were going to break my legs! They were going to throw me in the river! I just needed a way out! Norah is my wife—she belongs to me! If I give her to Valenti, he lets me walk!"

"She is not your wife," a voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.

Gabriel and Thomas both looked up.

Norah stood at the landing of the stairs. She was pale, but her posture was straight, her head held high. She had left Leo in the safe room with Mrs. Doyle, driven downstairs by an overwhelming need to face the man who had ruined her life.

"Norah!" Thomas shouted, taking a step toward the stairs. "Tell this mobster to let us go! We can leave together! We can start over in California!"

Norah walked down the stairs slowly, her eyes filled with an absolute, freezing contempt that made Thomas flinch.

"You left me with twelve dollars, Thomas," she said, her voice clear and ringing through the hall over the distant sounds of gunfire. "You left me in an unheated apartment with a sick baby. And tonight, you brought men with guns to murder us so you could pay off your gambling debts."

"I did it for us!" Thomas lied desperately.

"You did it for yourself," Norah spat. "You are a coward, Thomas. And I am done paying for your sins."

Thomas’s face twisted into a snarl of rage. "You ungrateful bitch! I made you!" He raised his revolver, aiming it directly at Norah’s chest.

"Norah, down!" Gabriel roared.

Before Thomas could pull the trigger, Gabriel closed the distance between them with terrifying speed. He grabbed Thomas’s wrist, twisting it upward as a gunshot shattered a high glass window above. Gabriel struck Thomas across the jaw with the butt of his sidearm, sending him crashing onto the marble floor.

Thomas groaned, dropping his weapon, spitting blood onto the white tile.

Gabriel stood over him, his boot pressing firmly against Thomas’s chest, the barrel of his gun pointed directly between Thomas’s eyes.

"Give me one reason," Gabriel whispered coldly, his finger tightening on the trigger, "why I shouldn't end your miserable life right here."
