Chapter 6 - The New DawnThree weeks later.

The spring thaw had finally begun in Chicago. The gray slush along the city streets was giving way to wet asphalt and the faint, hopeful smell of damp earth.

Inside the master suite of the North Estate, sunlight streamed through the tall windows, warming the hardwood floors. Two identical white cribs stood side by side near the fireplace, each occupied by a tiny, sleeping bundle wrapped in pink knit blankets.

Maya sat in a plush armchair by the window, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, looking down at the tiny baby girl cradled in her arms.

The door opened softly, and Adrian stepped inside. He had stripped off his suit jacket, rolling up his sleeves, his tie loosened around his collar. He looked tired—running a multi-billion-dollar criminal empire while simultaneously installing twenty-four-hour biometric security upgrades around an estate tended to keep a man busy—but his face softened the moment he crossed the threshold.

He walked over quietly, kneeling beside Maya’s chair. He reached out with one large, calloused finger, gently touching the tiny, peach-fuzz cheek of the baby in her arms.

"Is Chloe asleep?" he whispered, referencing the baby in Maya's arms.

"Like a rock," Maya whispered back with a small smile. "And her sister is out cold in the crib."

Adrian leaned his forehead gently against Maya’s knee, letting out a long, slow breath. The transformation in him over the past month had been absolute. The ruthless syndicate boss who ruled the underworld with an iron fist melted away the moment he entered this room, leaving behind only a devoted father and a husband fighting desperately for a second chance.

"The federal indictments against the Vance faction cleared this morning," Adrian murmured against her knee. "Marcus Vance is facing three consecutive life sentences without parole. The family is finished. Completely."

Maya looked down at him. She reached out, her fingers tangling gently in his dark hair. "And the empire?"

"Restructuring," Adrian said, looking up to meet her eyes. "I’m stepping back from the street-level operations. Grant is taking over the enforcement arm. I’m moving the syndicate’s capital entirely into legitimate global logistics and real estate holdings. By next year, the Cole name won't be whispered in back rooms. It’ll be listed on the New York Stock Exchange."

Maya studied his face. There was no hesitation in his eyes—only total, unreserved commitment.

"You're doing all of this for us?" she asked softly.

"I'm doing it because I finally learned what a real empire looks like," Adrian said, covering her hand with his own, pressing her palm against his cheek. "You walked away once, Maya, because my world was poison. I swore to myself that I would never give you a reason to walk away again. If that means burning my old life to the ground, consider it ashes."

Maya’s eyes welled with tears, but this time, they were tears of profound, hard-won peace.

She leaned down, shifting Chloe slightly in one arm, and used her free hand to pull Adrian up from the floor until he was sitting on the edge of the armchair beside her.

"The divorce papers," Maya said, a playful spark returning to her hazel eyes. "Your attorneys never actually filed them, you know."

Adrian raised an eyebrow, a slow, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. "Is that right?"

"Mmm-hmm," Maya nodded, leaning her head against his broad shoulder as he wrapped his arms securely around her and both babies, creating a fortress of warmth and safety that no enemy could ever penetrate. "Grant intercepted them before they reached the court. He said it was a tactical necessity."

Adrian let out a deep, rumbling laugh—the first real, carefree laugh Maya had heard from him in years. He pressed a tender kiss to the top of her head, inhaling the sweet scent of vanilla and baby shampoo.

"Remind me to give Grant a massive Christmas bonus," Adrian whispered.

Outside, the Chicago skyline rose tall and sharp against the bright spring sky. Below, the river flowed steadily toward the lake, carrying away the ice of a harsh winter. But inside the North Estate, shielded by walls of stone and an unbreakable circle of love, the cold was gone forever, replaced by the warm, brilliant light of a brand-new dawn.
