Chapter 5 - The Reckoning and the RingVictor tripped over the edge of the dais, crashing hard against the floorboards. He looked up, trembling violently, as Lorenzo stood over him like an executioner.

“Please... please, Conti, take whatever you want! Take my money, take my accounts!” Victor begged, his voice cracking with humiliation.
“I already took my money back,” Lorenzo said quietly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a single, heavy legal document, dropping it onto Victor’s chest. “And Miss Rossi has taken back her family estate. Sign the deed transfer, Victor, or you won't live to see the sunrise.”
Victor scrambled to pick up the pen, his hands shaking so badly he dropped it twice before violently scribbling his signature onto the dotted line.
Rocco stepped forward, snatching the document away and handing it to Isabella.
Isabella looked down at the official deed to her family’s historic estate in upstate New York. The heavy knot that had weighed on her chest for four long years finally dissolved. A single tear tracked hot down her cheek, but she brushed it away, her chin held high.
She turned her gaze to Lorenzo.
The mafia boss was looking at her—not with cold calculation, but with a fierce, burning warmth that made her breath hitch.
“It’s over, Isabella,” Lorenzo said softly, stepping closer to her.
“Because of you,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “You actually did it.”
“I told you,” Lorenzo replied, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. “Nobody steals from a Conti, and nobody touches what belongs to me.”
Before Isabella could process the possessive weight of that last sentence, Lorenzo reached into his breast pocket. He pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
The entire ballroom—still holding its breath as corrupt buyers and frightened dealers watched in silence—seemed to vanish.
Lorenzo popped the box open. Inside rested a breathtaking, antique ring featuring a rare, deep-green emerald surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds—a stunning family heirloom that gleamed under the chandeliers.
Isabella’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at the ring, then up into his dark, penetrating eyes.
“Lorenzo... what is this?”
“When you cursed me in Italian tonight in front of half of Manhattan’s elite, you called me an arrogant idiot,” Lorenzo said, his deep voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. “And the moment you stood your ground against me without an ounce of fear, I knew something important had happened.”
He slid the stunning emerald ring out of the velvet box.
“You’re the only person in this city who isn't afraid of my name,” Lorenzo continued, taking her hand in his warm, strong grasp. “And you’re the only woman I ever want standing by my side. Marry me, Isabella.”
The silence in the room was absolute. A notorious mafia boss, proposing to an art authenticator in the middle of a shattered criminal auction house. It was madness. It was dangerous. It was intoxicating.
Isabella looked down at the ring, then looked deep into his eyes, remembering the night, the forgery, the warehouse, and the way he had fought to restore her honor.

She smiled—a radiant, brilliant smile that reached her eyes for the first time in years.
“Well,” Isabella murmured softly in fluent Italian, her eyes sparkling with challenge and love, “I suppose the devil finally took me. Yes, Lorenzo. I’ll marry you.”
