CHAPTER 1 — THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED

The room smelled wrong.
Not wrong like a room did after a party, with empty glasses abandoned on polished tables and expensive cigars lingering in velvet curtains.
This was different.
Harsher.
Dirtier.
Vodka.
Sweat.
Metal.
And the sandalwood cologne Evelyn Cross knew better than her own heartbeat.
Her hand froze on the brass handle of Marcus Vale's study.
For a moment, she thought she was imagining things.
She had spent the entire afternoon smiling.
Planning.
Dreaming.
Inside the cream-colored envelope hidden beneath her coat was the secret she had been carrying for weeks.
A grainy ultrasound photograph.
Two tiny heartbeats.
Twins.
She had rehearsed the moment over and over.
Marcus would look at the image.
Go silent.
Then smile.
Maybe laugh.
Maybe pull her into his arms.
The thought had carried her through weeks of morning sickness and sleepless nights.
Now she stood outside his study, only a few feet away from changing both of their lives forever.
Instead, her world ended.
The door opened slightly.
And she saw them.
Marcus.
And Chloe.
Her younger sister.
The study seemed to tilt around her.
Marcus stood beside his desk, sleeves rolled to his elbows.
One hand rested on Chloe's waist.
The other gripped the edge of the mahogany desk.
Chloe's blonde hair spilled across the green leather surface.
Her silver moon-shaped necklace swung gently against her throat.
The necklace Evelyn had bought for her years ago.
Neither of them noticed the door.
Neither of them saw her.
Evelyn couldn't breathe.
Her mind refused to process what her eyes were seeing.
The room blurred.
The edges of her vision darkened.
For a brief, desperate second she hoped there was an explanation.
Some misunderstanding.
Some mistake.
But the image remained exactly the same.
Marcus.
And Chloe.
Together.
She didn't scream.
She didn't cry.
She didn't demand answers.
She simply stepped backward.
Then again.
And again.
Until the door clicked shut.
Quietly.
Carefully.
As if making noise would somehow make it more real.
The hallway stretched before her.
Long.
Silent.
Decorated with paintings worth more than most people's homes.
Everything in the mansion suddenly felt strange.
Foreign.
As though she had never truly belonged there.
The envelope crumpled in her hand.
The ultrasound image bent beneath her fingers.
Twins.
Marcus didn't even know.
And suddenly, he never would.
Evelyn walked to the hall closet.
Months earlier, she had hidden a canvas duffel bag there.
An emergency bag.
Something she packed after a nightmare she never told anyone about.
At the time she had felt guilty.
Paranoid.
A woman in love didn't prepare escape plans.
But a woman engaged to Marcus Vale learned to prepare for everything.
Including disaster.
She pulled the bag down.
Opened it.
And began moving quickly.
Passport.
Cash.
Jeans.
A sweater.
A few essentials.
Nothing else.
The diamonds stayed.
The designer dresses stayed.
The credit cards stayed.
Anything Marcus could track stayed behind.
Every second mattered.
Because once Marcus discovered she was gone, the search would begin.
And Marcus never stopped searching for anything he considered his.
At the front door she hesitated.
Only once.
The mansion was quiet.
Too quiet.
Somewhere down the hallway, Marcus was still inside the study.
Still with Chloe.
Still completely unaware that his future was slipping through his fingers.
Evelyn pressed a trembling hand against her stomach.
Tears finally filled her eyes.
Not for herself.
For the babies.
For the family that would never exist.
For the life she had imagined.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
The words were meant for the twins.
"I thought we were giving you a home."
Her voice cracked.
"But I was wrong."
Then she opened the door.
And stepped into the rain.
The storm outside was brutal.
Cold water soaked her coat almost immediately.
Thunder rolled across the dark sky.
The wind whipped through her hair.
But she kept walking.
One block.
Then two.
Then five.
Every step took her farther from Marcus.
Farther from Chloe.
Farther from the life she thought she wanted.
At the corner of the street, she climbed into a taxi.
The driver glanced at her through the mirror.
"Airport?"
Evelyn looked back once.
Only once.
The distant lights of the Vale mansion glowed through the rain.
Beautiful.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
A palace built on fear and loyalty.
A palace she would never enter again.
"Yes," she said quietly.
"The airport."
The taxi pulled away.
And for the first time in years, Evelyn felt completely alone.
Thirty minutes later, Marcus finally left the study.
His expression was dark.
Annoyed.
Frustrated.
The argument with Chloe had gone nowhere.
Just as he expected.
He loosened his tie and headed toward the master bedroom.
"Evelyn?"
No answer.
A faint smile touched his lips.
Maybe she was asleep.
Then he noticed the empty room.
The untouched bed.
The missing suitcase.
The closet door slightly open.
The smile vanished.
Instantly.
Something cold settled inside his chest.
"Evelyn?"
This time his voice was sharper.
Still no answer.
He searched the bathroom.
The balcony.
The guest rooms.
Nothing.
Then he found the note.
A single sheet of paper lying on the dresser.
Only six words.
Don't look for me. Goodbye.
Marcus stared at it.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The room became deadly silent.
Then his phone appeared in his hand.
One call.
A single call.
And the entire Vale organization sprang into action.
"Find her."
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
Every man listening understood exactly what that meant.
Private jets.
Investigators.
Security teams.
Millions of dollars.
Whatever it took.
May you like
Because Marcus Vale had just lost the only woman he had ever loved.
And somewhere in the darkness, Evelyn Cross was disappearing with a secret that would change both their lives forever.
