CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO WOULDN’T STOP LOOKING

By midnight, every trusted man in Marcus Vale’s organization was awake.

Phones rang across New York, Boston, Miami, and Chicago.

Private investigators were pulled from other assignments.

Security teams were mobilized.

Airports were checked.

Train stations were monitored.

Bank activity was tracked.

Marcus wanted one thing.

Evelyn.

And he wanted her found.

Fast.

But Evelyn had prepared better than anyone expected.

By the time Marcus's people reviewed the airport footage, she was already gone.

No credit card activity.

No phone signal.

No social media.

Nothing.

It was as if she had vanished from the world.

For the first time in years, Marcus found himself facing a problem he couldn’t solve with power, money, or fear.

Because Evelyn knew him.

She knew exactly how he operated.

And she knew how to disappear.

Three days later, Marcus stood alone in his study.

The same study.

The same room where everything had gone wrong.

The room where Evelyn had seen something that made her walk away forever.

Or so she believed.

Marcus poured himself a drink and stared at the empty glass.

Then his eyes landed on something tucked beneath the desk.

A cream-colored envelope.

His heart stopped.

He recognized it immediately.

Evelyn’s.

He picked it up.

Opened it.

And froze.

Inside was an ultrasound photograph.

Two tiny shadows.

Two tiny heartbeats.

Twins.

For several seconds, Marcus couldn’t breathe.

His hands trembled.

Actually trembled.

The most feared man on the East Coast stared at the image like the world had suddenly shifted beneath his feet.

“She was pregnant…”

The words barely escaped his mouth.

Then came the second realization.

She had been carrying their children when she left.

Across the country, Evelyn sat on a small porch overlooking the ocean.

A tiny coastal town.

A place nobody connected to Marcus Vale would ever think to search.

The apartment was modest.

The furniture old.

The walls thin.

But it was peaceful.

For the first time in years, she could walk outside without bodyguards following her.

She could buy groceries alone.

She could sit on a beach bench and watch the waves.

No luxury.

No danger.

No lies.

At least that was what she kept telling herself.

Yet every night, when she placed a hand on her growing stomach, memories returned.

Marcus laughing softly at something only she understood.

Marcus carrying her when she fell asleep on the couch.

Marcus kissing her forehead before leaving for work.

The memories hurt more than the betrayal itself.

Because part of her still loved him.

And she hated herself for it.

Meanwhile, Marcus began digging into the truth.

The more he thought about that night, the less sense it made.

Chloe.

The study.

What Evelyn must have seen.

What she must have assumed.

Something wasn't right.

Marcus remembered the argument.

Remembered Chloe showing up unexpectedly.

Remembered her confession.

Her obsession.

The way she had grabbed him.

The way he had pushed her away.

Then the realization hit him.

Evelyn had only seen part of it.

Not the whole truth.

Never the whole truth.

And now she was gone because she believed the worst.

The next morning, Marcus summoned Chloe.

She arrived at the mansion pale and nervous.

For the first time in years, she looked genuinely afraid.

Marcus sat behind his desk.

Silent.

Deadly calm.

“Tell me exactly what happened that night.”

Chloe swallowed hard.

“Marcus—”

“Now.”

His voice cut through the room like a blade.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I loved you.”

Marcus stared at her without expression.

“I know.”

“I thought if Evelyn wasn’t around—”

“Stop.”

She immediately fell silent.

The disappointment in his face hurt more than anger would have.

“You destroyed your relationship with your sister.”

Chloe began crying.

“You don't understand.”

“No,” Marcus replied coldly. “You don't understand.”

He leaned forward.

“She left carrying my children.”

The color drained from Chloe’s face.

“What?”

“She was pregnant.”

The room went silent.

For the first time, genuine horror appeared in Chloe’s eyes.

Months passed.

Then a year.

Then two.

Marcus never stopped searching.

Every lead ended the same way.

Nothing.

Yet he refused to give up.

Because somewhere out there was Evelyn.

And somewhere out there were his children.

Children he had never met.

Children who might not even know his name.

The thought haunted him every day.

Then, two years and three months after Evelyn disappeared, everything changed.

A private investigator arrived at Marcus’s office carrying a photograph.

“I found her.”

The words froze the room.

Marcus slowly took the photo.

And his entire world stopped.

There she was.

Evelyn.

Standing outside a small bakery.

Her hair longer.

Her face softer.

Beautiful as ever.

Alive.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her were two children.

A little boy.

A little girl.

About two years old.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

His eyes.

Marcus stared at the picture for a very long time.

Then he whispered:

“My children.”

Emotion tightened his throat.

Relief.

Hope.

Regret.

Love.

All at once.

Finally, after more than two years, he knew where she was.

And for the first time since she disappeared into the rain, Marcus Vale smiled.

Because the search was over.

Now came the hard part.

Convincing Evelyn to listen to the truth.
