Chapter 4 - The Ring and the Declaration of WarEvelyn stood paralyzed. The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

“Your... your fiancée?” she echoed, her voice barely a breath. “Gabriel, you’ve lost your mind. We’ve spent three years talking about shipping manifests and offshore accounts! We’ve never even had a cup of coffee together outside of the office!”
“We’ve spent three years surviving together,” Gabriel corrected smoothly, taking her trembling left hand in his large, warm palm. “You know every secret I have. You hold the keys to every account, every safehouse, and every shell corporation I own. In the eyes of the underworld, you are already the most dangerous woman in Chicago.”
He slid the stunning Art Deco diamond ring onto her ring finger. It fit with miraculous, terrifying perfection.
“And in the eyes of my enemies,” Gabriel continued, his voice dropping into a dark, lethal register, “if anyone so much as looks at you the wrong way, they sign their own death warrant. By claiming you as my fiancée publicly, I am drawing a red line around you that no one in this city will dare cross. Anyone who tries will find out what happens when the Mercer empire goes to total war.”
Evelyn looked down at the ring sparkling under the chandelier light. It was breathtaking, heavy, and completely binding. It was a shield forged in steel and blood.
“And if I say no?” Evelyn challenged softly, looking back up into his relentless eyes. “What if I want to walk out those front gates, take my sister, and run far away from your war?”
Gabriel’s expression didn't flicker. He didn't blink.
“You can try,” Gabriel said quietly, stepping even closer until she could feel the heat of his chest against hers. “My men outside will drive you wherever you want to go. My private jet is fueled on the tarmac at Midway. But within twenty-four hours, the men who hunted you down tonight will find you in whatever quiet town you try to hide in. Because once my enemies know you hold my secrets, they won't stop hunting you until you’re dead.”
He reached up, his calloused fingers gently cupping her jawline, his thumb brushing across her lower lip.
“Stay with me, Evelyn,” he whispered, his voice losing its harsh edge, replaced by a raw, surprising vulnerability. “Let me protect you. Let me protect Clara. And let me burn down every single person who ever made you afraid.”
The sheer weight of his devotion—fierce, possessive, and absolute—shattered the last of Evelyn’s defenses. She realized he wasn't just trapping her; he was offering her the only true safety that existed in his world: the shelter of his name.
Slowly, shakily, Evelyn let out a long breath. She reached up, resting her hand over his where it held her cheek.
“If we’re going to war, Gabriel,” Evelyn said, a fierce, unexpected spark of rebellion flashing in her brown eyes, “then I want to sit in the war room with you. No more hiding behind desks.”

Gabriel’s face broke into a rare, genuine smile—a terrifying, brilliant expression that transformed his harsh features entirely.
“God help me,” Gabriel murmured, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against her forehead. “I’ve fallen in love with the most dangerous woman in Illinois.”
