Chapter 5 - Blood on the Gold CoastBy 10:00 a.m., the news had swept through the hidden corridors of Chicago’s underworld like wildfire.

Gabriel Mercer, the undisputed king of the North Side docks, had taken a fiancée.

Not a debutante from a wealthy political family. Not the daughter of an allied mafia boss. But his quiet, unassuming executive secretary, Evelyn Cross—the woman who held the master keys to his entire financial empire.

Inside the subterranean command bunker beneath the Mercer Estate, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Massive digital screens lined the concrete walls, displaying live satellite feeds of downtown financial districts, encrypted wiretap transcripts, and real-time security footage of the city's docks.

Evelyn sat at the head of a massive steel conference table. She had traded her tired office blouse for a sharp, tailored black blazer, her dark hair pinned back into a sleek bun. On her left ring finger, the Art Deco diamond caught the harsh fluorescent light of the bunker.

Standing behind her chair like a guardian titan was Gabriel, his arms crossed over his chest, listening intently as his chief enforcer, a scarred veteran named Rocco, briefed the inner circle.

“The Outfit’s leadership is in full panic mode, Boss,” Rocco reported, slamming a dossier onto the table. “Don Salvatore thinks you’re consolidating power by elevating someone who knows where every single body is buried. They’re calling an emergency tribunal at the warehouse down on South Cicero.”

“A tribunal,” Gabriel repeated, his voice dripping with cold disdain. “They think they can summon me like a subordinate.”

“They want to test the new arrangement,” Rocco added, glancing sideways at Evelyn. “They sent a message. An ultimatum. Either you hand over the financial ledgers for the port expansions, or the tribunal moves against your new... fiancée.”

The room went dead silent. Every enforcer and caporegime in the bunker held their breath, waiting to see how the boss would react to a direct challenge to his woman.

Gabriel uncrossed his arms. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his fists on the table.

“Tell Salvatore I accept his invitation,” Gabriel said quietly.

“Gabriel, no,” Evelyn stood up immediately, turning to face him. “It’s a trap. They know you’re coming. They want to draw you out into an enclosed space where their numbers advantage—”

“Let them have their numbers,” Gabriel interrupted, his gray eyes locking onto hers with absolute, terrifying calm. He reached down, resting his hands on her shoulders. “Salvatore thinks he’s dealing with a standard business dispute. He doesn't realize that the moment he threatened you, he signed his own death warrant.”

He looked up at Rocco.

“Mobilize fifty men. Heavy tactical gear. We’re not attending their tribunal, Rocco. We’re executing a hostile takeover.”

Within an hour, a convoy of six black armored SUVs rolled out of the Mercer Estate gates, cutting through the autumn rain toward the abandoned shipping warehouses of South Cicero.
