Chapter 3 - Descent Over NaplesThe lights of the Neapolitan coast glittered like spilled diamonds against the velvet black of the Tyrrhenian Sea as the private jet began its steep, smooth descent.

For the past hour, I had sat in silence, turning the sketchbook over and over in my hands. The threads along the spine—once invisible to my grief-blinded eyes—now looked like a terrifying map of a world I never knew existed. Every word Dante had said hung in the air between us like a cloud of smoke. He hadn't touched me, he hadn't threatened me directly, but he had systematically dismantled every illusion of safety I had ever clung to.
The plane’s landing gear locked into place with a heavy, reassuring thud.
Dante stood up, buttoning his charcoal jacket. He reached down and picked up my purse, handing it to me with a formal, almost courtly nod.
"We are landing at a private hangar owned by my family," Dante said as the aircraft leveled out on the tarmac. "There will be cars waiting. You will meet my mother and my younger sister, Elena. They have been briefed."
I looked up at him, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Briefed on what? That you kidnapped an American art dealer and forced her into a sham marriage?"
"Briefed on the reality of our engagement," Dante corrected smoothly. "And knowing my mother, she has already begun planning a traditional southern Italian wedding reception to make it legally binding in the eyes of the church, whether you like it or not."
I let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh. "You’re insane."
"I am thorough," he corrected, stepping toward the cabin door as it hissed open to let in the cool, salt-scented Mediterranean breeze. He turned back, offering his hand. "Coming, Mrs. Ricci?"
I stared at his hand—strong, warm, and steady. For a long moment, the instinct to run warred with the chilling realization that outside these doors, a world of ruthless men was hunting for the secrets resting in my bag.
Slowly, I placed my hand in his.
His fingers closed firmly around mine, secure and unyielding.
As we descended the metal stairs of the aircraft, two sleek black Mercedes-Maybachs waited on the tarmac, their headlights cutting through the misty night air. Standing beside the lead car was an older woman with silver-streaked dark hair, wearing a dark wool coat, flanked by two towering security guards.
As soon as she saw us, her sharp, critical gaze locked onto me.
"Dante," she called out in a voice that commanded absolute authority. "Is this the girl?"
May you like
Dante’s grip on my hand tightened slightly, a silent reassurance.
"Yes, Mother," Dante replied, stepping forward with me at his side. "Meet your new daughter-in-law. Sophia."
