Chapter 5 - The Conclave of Ashes

The nave of St. Jude’s Church was an inferno of muzzle flashes, shattering plaster, and falling timber.
Vincente Voss had spared no expense. He had hired a squad of former Eastern European mercenaries—men who didn't care about the High Conclave or the Black Crown, men paid five hundred thousand dollars to leave no survivors inside the building.
Six mercenaries were advancing up the central aisle toward the spiral staircase, their assault rifles raised, laying down suppressive fire against Silas, who was pinned behind a heavy oak pew near the entrance.
Above them, on the choir loft balcony, Gabriel appeared through the smoke.
He did not duck. He did not run.
With terrifying, cold precision, Gabriel fired downward—BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three mercenaries collapsed instantly, their bodies crashing into the broken wooden pews. The remaining three spun around in surprise, raising their weapons toward the loft, but Gabriel was already moving.
He leaped over the carved marble railing, dropping fifteen feet onto the stone floor with liquid grace, coming up in a low roll!
Before the lead mercenary could acquire his target, Gabriel caught the barrel of his rifle, twisted the weapon out of his hands, snapped the man’s elbow with a brutal strike, and fired two rapid rounds into the chest of the second attacker!
Silas broke cover, firing his sidearm to take down the third man as he tried to reload!
Silence returned to the church, broken only by the crackle of burning velvet curtains and the heavy, rhythmic breathing of the three survivors.
Gabriel stood in the center aisle, his dark overcoat dusted with plaster, his face calm and unblemished. He turned toward the choir balcony stairs where Nora was carefully stepping down, holding her father’s hard drive against her ribs.
She reached the bottom step, her eyes wide as she looked at the defeated mercenaries strewn across the marble floor, then up at Gabriel.
He walked over to her, taking her hand gently into his blood-stained glove.
“It’s time to end this, Nora,” Gabriel said quietly.
Two hours later.
The Grand Assembly Hall beneath Manhattan’s historic Federal Hall was a subterranean stone amphitheater that had served as the seat of the High Conclave for two centuries.
Over one hundred leaders of the underworld—delegates from Chicago, London, Miami, and Marseille—filled the rising tiers of dark leather seats.
At the center of the amphitheater stood Vincente Voss, surrounded by four remaining members of his private council. He looked triumphantly at the empty throne at the top of the hall.
“Gabriel Thorne has abandoned his post!” Vincente announced into the central microphone, his voice echoing through the stone vault. “He went to Queens tonight to hide the traitorous girl! He is compromised! I call for an immediate vote of non-confidence to strip the Thorne family of the Black Crown!”
A low, uneasy chatter filled the room. The delegates looked around nervously.
BOOM!
The heavy bronze double doors at the top of the amphitheater blew open, slamming against the stone walls with a deafening thunderclap!
Every head in the room snapped upward.
Walking through the doorway was Gabriel Thorne.
He was dressed in a pristine black suit, his dark silk tie immaculate, his silver hair brushed back. Standing proudly beside him, wearing a dark emerald wool coat, her head held high like a sovereign queen, was Nora Wren.
Behind them walked Silas, carrying a heavy steel tactical briefcase.
The hundred delegates stood up in unison, a chorus of stunned gasps sweeping through the room.
Vincente Voss stumbled back against the podium, his face turning an impossible shade of ghost-white. “No... no! The squad in Queens... they said—”
“Your mercenaries are dead, Vincente,” Gabriel’s voice boomed through the stone hall, deep, resonant, and absolute.
Gabriel walked down the grand stone steps, leading Nora by the hand until they stood in the center of the floor, right opposite the podium.
Silas stepped forward, setting the steel briefcase on the central stone altar. He unlatched the locks and flipped the lid open.
Inside, illuminated by blue LED lights, sat the master hard drive from St. Jude’s clocktower, connected directly to a high-speed satellite transmitter.
Above the amphitheater, three massive digital screens flashed to life.
Lines of color-coded code began scrolling at incredible speed—displaying thirty years of the Voss family’s crimes: illegal arms sales, human trafficking routes, judge bribes, and the specific bank accounts used to fund the hit squad sent to kill Thomas Wren ten years ago.
And at the bottom of the screen flashed a live broadcast feed from the Federal District Court of New York: GRAND JURY INDICTMENT ISSUED FOR VINCENTE VOSS AND DAMON VOSS.
The hall erupted into utter chaos!
Delegates shouted in anger, pointing fingers at Vincente as the evidence of his betrayal of the Conclave’s core laws was laid bare for the entire world to see.
“You brought federal indictments upon us?!” Don Castiglione screamed, drawing his sidearm and pointing it straight at Vincente’s head!
“I didn't bring them!” Vincente shrieked, backing away toward the wall. “She did! The girl!”
Nora took a firm step forward, stepping ahead of Gabriel, her voice cutting through the rising roar of the room with terrifying, absolute clarity.
“My father, Thomas Wren, gave his life to protect the honor of this council,” Nora declared, her hazel eyes burning like molten gold. “You murdered him, Vincente. You tried to bury me alive beneath the Ashford Tower to hide your cowardice. But my father built a ledger that cannot be burned, cannot be bought, and cannot be buried.”
She turned to face the hundred delegates of the High Conclave.
“The files on those screens contain only the crimes of the Voss family,” Nora announced clearly. “The records of the other four families have been isolated and encrypted under Gabriel Thorne’s private authority. The Voss dynasty ends tonight. The rest of you have a choice: yield to the Black Crown, or be exposed alongside him.”
The absolute genius of her move hit the room like a thunderbolt.
By isolating Vincente’s crimes and giving Gabriel total control over the remaining data, she had handed Gabriel absolute, unassailable power over the entire underground empire, while completely destroying the man who had ordered her father’s death.
One by one, starting with Don Castiglione, the leaders in the amphitheater dropped to one knee.
“Hail the Black Crown,” Castiglione shouted.
“HAIL THE BLACK CROWN!” one hundred voices echoed through the stone vaults, bowing low before Gabriel Thorne and the brave woman standing by his side.
Vincente Voss fell to his knees in the dust, completely broken, as federal agents—guided by Silas’s anonymous tip—surrounded the upper exits of the hall to take him into custody.

Gabriel turned to Nora. In front of the entire assembled Conclave, the High Sovereign took her hand, lifted it to his lips, and pressed a deep, devoted kiss against her knuckles.
“My father gave me a debt,” Gabriel whispered into her ear. “You gave me a kingdom.”
