Chapter 2 - The Cage of Silk and SteelThe Vale Estate sat on a secluded cliff overlooking Lake Michigan, wrapped in iron gates, high-voltage security fences, and high-definition surveillance cameras. To the outside world, it was an architectural masterpiece of limestone and glass. To Ava, as the iron gates slammed shut behind their convoy of black SUVs, it looked like a gilded fortress.

Inside, the mansion was breathtakingly cold. White marble floors reflected crystal chandeliers, and vaulted ceilings made every whisper echo.

Damian led her into a grand library lined with thousands of leather-bound books, a roaring fire casting long, dancing shadows across the room.

“This will be your home for the next six months,” Damian said, tossing his gloves onto a mahogany desk. He sank into a high-backed leather chair, a subtle grimace of pain crossing his features as his wounded side pulled.

Ava noticed the flinch immediately. She walked toward him, forgetting her own anxiety for a moment. “Your stitches are pulling, aren’t they? You shouldn’t be walking around with a cane so soon after chest trauma.”

Damian looked up at her, a strange look passing through his gray eyes. “I don’t have the luxury of convalescing, Ava.”

“It’s not a luxury; it’s basic biology,” she retorted, crossing her arms. “If you burst an internal artery, all the security guards in Chicago won’t save you.”

Marcus walked into the room carrying a silver tray with a pitcher of water and two glasses. He paused, witnessing a simple diner waitress lecturing the most feared man in the city on medical care. A tiny, almost imperceptible twitch appeared at the corner of Marcus’s scarred eyebrow.

“She’s right, Boss,” Marcus grunted, setting the tray down. “Dr. Chen said you needed two more weeks of bed rest.”

“Dr. Chen isn’t dealing with the collapse of our supply lines in the harbor,” Damian said coldly. He turned back to Ava. “Tomorrow afternoon, we host a press conference at the Drake Hotel. We announce our engagement. The story will be simple: we met months ago, kept our romance private, and your blood donation was an act of devotion, not a coincidence.”

“A fairy tale,” Ava said, her tone dripping with quiet sarcasm. “The billionaire and the waitress.”

“The public loves a fairy tale,” Damian replied. “And more importantly, it forces Victor Vance into a corner. If he attacks you after you are publicly named as my fiancée, it triggers a full-scale war with every family aligned with the Vale network. He won't risk that.”

“And what about what I want?” Ava asked softly, stepping closer to the desk.

Damian paused, his hand resting on the silver handle of his cane. “What do you want, Ava?”

“I want to know who tried to kill you,” she said, her voice dropping. “I want to know why a man who has everything in the world has so many people who want him dead.”

Damian stared at her for a long moment. The firelight flickered in the dark pupils of his eyes.

“When you have everything, Ava,” Damian said quietly, “everyone wants a piece of it. Some try to buy it. Some try to steal it. And some try to shoot you in the chest to take it.”

He pointed toward a set of double doors at the end of the hall. “Your suite is prepared. My personal staff has provided clothing and whatever else you require. Get some rest. Tomorrow, your old life ends.”

Ava stood there for a second, looking at the man who sat so rigidly in his chair, carrying the weight of an empire on his bloodied shoulders. She touched the heavy diamond ring resting on her finger—it felt cold against her skin.

Without another word, she turned and walked toward her room.

As the heavy doors closed behind her, Marcus leaned over Damian’s desk. “She’s different, Boss. She didn't even check the credit limit on the black card we gave her.”

Damian looked down at his desk, where a small drop of blood had seeped through his dark shirt from his reopened wound. He didn't seem to notice the pain.

“She gave me her blood without asking for a name, Marcus,” Damian murmured, staring into the fire. “A woman like that can’t be bought. And that makes her the most dangerous person in this house.”
