Chapter 5 - The Fall of the EmpireFor three agonizing hours, Ava sat in the soundproof panic room, staring at the bank of security monitors built into the wall.

She watched as Marcus and Damian swept through the estate with clinical, terrifying efficiency, neutralizing six heavily armed mercenaries dressed in tactical gear. There was no hesitation in Damian’s movements—he fought with a dark, ruthless intelligence that proved why he was the most feared man in Chicago.
By 3:00 AM, the estate was secure. Police cars and federal unmarked sedans filled the driveway outside, their red and blue lights reflecting off the wet limestone facade.
The heavy steel door of the panic room clicked and slid open.
Damian stood on the other side. His white shirt was stained with soot and blood—none of it his own—and his knuckles were bruised. But his gray eyes were bright with triumph.
Ava didn't hesitate. She threw herself into his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Damian caught her, pulling her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair. He held her as if she were the only real thing in a world made of chaos and violence.
“It’s over,” Damian whispered against her skin, his hands trembling slightly as he held her. “It’s over, Ava.”
“Are you hurt?” she pulled back, checking his chest and arms frantically.
“I’m intact,” he assured her gently, placing his hands on her cheeks to calm her. “Marcus recovered the mercenaries’ encrypted radios. The contract came directly from Victor Vance’s personal account. The FBI is raiding his compound right now. He’s finished. His empire is being dismantled as we speak.”
Ava let out a long, ragged sigh of relief, leaning her forehead against his chest.
“You’re safe now,” Damian added softly, though a strange, somber tone entered his voice. “The threat is eliminated. You don't have to stay here anymore.”
Ava froze. She pulled back slightly, looking up into his eyes.
“What do you mean?”
Damian looked away, his jaw clenching. He walked over to the desk in the library, picking up a thick legal folder that had been sitting there for weeks.
“Our contract,” Damian said, his voice flat, emotionless—the corporate mask sliding back over his face. “The terms were simple. Six months, or until the threat was removed. My lawyers have prepared the annulment papers. The ten million dollars has already been transferred to a private account in your name.”
He pushed the folder toward her.
“You can return to your life, Ava. You can buy a restaurant, travel the world, do whatever you want. You are completely free.”
Ava stared at the black folder lying on the desk. She looked at the annulment papers, then at the heavy diamond ring still resting on her left hand.
The room fell completely silent.
“Free?” Ava repeated, her voice barely a whisper. She looked at him, tears stinging the corners of her eyes. “You think this was just a contract to me, Damian?”
“It was a arrangement to protect you,” Damian said, refusing to meet her gaze. “You didn't belong in this world of blood and guns, Ava. I dragged you into it because I was selfish and wanted to survive. I won't hold you hostage in my darkness any longer.”
“You idiot,” Ava said, her voice rising with sudden, fierce anger.
Damian blinked, caught off guard. “What?”
“You absolute, arrogant idiot!” Ava shouted, stepping up to him and shoving his chest with both hands. “You think you’re protecting me by pushing me away?! You think I stayed in this house for two months because of ten million dollars?!”
Damian stared at her, completely stunned.
“I stayed because I cared about you!” Ava cried, tears finally slipping down her cheeks. “I stayed because I watched a man who thought he had to carry the world on his shoulders learn how to smile again! I stayed because I fell in love with you, Damian Vale!”
Damian stood frozen, his breath catching in his throat.
Ava pulled the heavy diamond ring off her finger and slammed it onto the mahogany desk.

“Keep your money,” she choked out, her voice breaking. “Keep your annulment papers. Keep your cold marble house.”
She turned on her heel and walked out of the library, leaving Damian standing alone in the quiet darkness of his grand fortress.
