Chapter 4 - The House of Glass and Iron"Drop the weapon, Hale," Lucian ordered, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the hallway.

Garrett’s hand trembled. He looked from Lucian’s unwavering gun barrel to his own two subordinates, who were already pinned against the opposite wall by Dante and the Moretti operatives, their weapons stripped from their holsters in less than three seconds.
"You can't do this," Garrett stammered, trying to retreat behind his corrupt authority. "I’m a sworn officer of the law! This is a federal kidnapping—!"
"This isn't a kidnapping, Detective," a calm, resolute voice interrupted.
Elena stepped out from behind the doorframe. The plastic zip-ties had fallen to the floor—cut effortlessly with a surgical blade she had slipped from her pocket during the chaos. She rubbed her wrists, walking forward with a posture that radiated complete, unshakable authority.
"This is a citizen’s intervention," Elena said, stopping two feet away from Garrett.
Garrett glared at her, his eyes blazing with venom. "You're out of your mind, Ellie. You think this animal is going to protect you? He’s a criminal! When the state police trace this shootout, you’ll go down right beside him!"
"The state police won't have to trace anything," a smooth, cultured voice said from the top of the stairwell.
A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal overcoat stepped into the light, holding a heavy leather briefcase. It was Victor Vance, Lucian’s corporate counsel and head of security compliance.
Victor walked past Lucian, opening the briefcase to reveal a pristine stack of certified financial records, digital hard drives, and legal depositions.
"Detective Garrett Hale," Victor recited calmly, flipping open a folder. "Badge number 4482, North River PD. For the past four years, you’ve operated a protective racket funnelling municipal hospital construction grants through dummy corporations managed by your uncle in Boston. Furthermore, you’ve maintained an illegal surveillance file on Ms. Elena Marsh—violating interstate stalking laws, fabricating false internal affairs reports, and using public police databases to track her location across state lines."
Garrett stared at the documents, his breath catching in his throat. "That’s... those are falsified documents—"
"They’re encrypted backups extracted directly from the North River precinct’s internal server three hours ago," Victor corrected smoothly, snapping the briefcase shut. "Along with recorded phone calls of you discussing how to frame Ms. Marsh if she ever threatened to expose your drug-money laundering ring."
Lucian stepped closer to Garrett, the barrel of his gun pressing firmly against the center of Garrett’s tactical vest.
"You spent months hunting a woman who only ever wanted to save lives," Lucian murmured, his voice dropping into a deadly, low whisper. "You used a badge as a shield to terrorize someone who was too strong for you to control. And tonight, you walked right into a cage of your own making."
"Kill me, then," Garrett sneered, his bravado flaring up in a last desperate gasp of arrogance. "Go ahead. If you pull that trigger, every federal agent from here to Washington will hunt you down."
"I don't need to kill you, Detective," Lucian replied, his expression turning to stone. "Men like you don't survive prison when the inmates find out what kind of cop you were. And thanks to Ms. Marsh’s meticulous record-keeping... you're going to spend the rest of your life finding out what it's like to have zero jurisdiction."
With a sudden, brutal movement, Dante stepped forward and struck Garrett across the temple with the heavy butt of his sidearm. Garrett collapsed onto the floor like a broken doll, unconscious before he even hit the linoleum.
The two subordinate officers were quickly zip-tied and dragged out toward the service elevator by the operatives.
Silence fell over the apartment once more.
Lucian lowered his gun, letting out a sharp hiss of pain as his side flared up. He stumbled slightly, leaning against the kitchen counter.
Elena was instantly by his side. Her professional training overrode everything else.

"Dante! Get him back on the bed. His stitches just tore," she commanded, her voice brooking no argument.
Dante nodded respectfully, helping his boss maneuver back into the studio.
