Chapter 6 - Dawn Over LakehurstThree weeks later.

The morning sun over Boston Harbor was brilliant, casting a golden light across the sleek glass facade of the Moretti-Marsh Foundation for Emergency Trauma Care—a newly established, fully endowed medical research and victim-support center overlooking the water.
Inside the top-floor executive office, the walls were lined with clean oak shelving, bright modern art, and large windows that welcomed the fresh ocean breeze.
Elena sat behind a broad mahogany desk, wearing a tailored emerald blazer over a crisp white silk shirt. On her wrist gleamed a simple gold bracelet, and on her desk sat her medical license, reinstated and framed with full honors.
The heavy oak door opened softly, and Lucian stepped inside carrying two cups of fresh black coffee. He wore an open-collared navy suit, looking completely recovered, his dark hair neat and his posture relaxed.
He set a cup down on her desk, leaning over to press a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
"How’s the first official board meeting looking?" Lucian asked, his eyes dancing with quiet amusement.
"Better than expected," Elena replied with a bright, confident smile, spinning her chair around to face him. "Victor finalized the municipal grants, the state medical board cleared our emergency intake protocols, and not a single corrupt cop from North River is within five hundred miles of our jurisdiction."
Lucian chuckled, handing her the coffee. "Good. Because Dante reported that the last of Garrett Hale’s co-conspirators took a plea deal this morning. The North River precinct is under complete federal receivership."
Elena took a sip of the coffee, letting out a long, contented sigh as she looked out over the bustling harbor where cargo ships moved safely and efficiently beneath the morning sky.
The fear that had once defined her life was gone, replaced by something solid, powerful, and entirely her own. She wasn't hiding anymore. She wasn't running from shadows or locking deadbolts in terror.
She had built an empire of her own—one life, one suture, one truth at a time.
Lucian reached out, taking her hand in his, interlocking their fingers with a fierce, quiet loyalty that needed no words.

"Come on," Lucian murmured, pulling her gently to her feet. "Let's go watch the ships come in."
Elena smiled, stepping out into the sunlight beside the man who had tumbled through her window and found a woman he could never break.
