Chapter 2 - The Crack in the ArmorThe silence in the bank lobby became thick enough to suffocate.

Valentin took two aggressive steps toward Amelia, his boots clicking sharply against the tile. He raised the barrel of his shotgun, pointing it dangerously close to where she sat huddled against the counter.

“I asked you a question, little bird,” Valentin sneered, his eyes darting back to Dominic. “She reacted. You reacted. Don’t tell me the great Castellano has a soft spot hiding behind a cheap winter coat.”

Dominic didn't flinch, but the muscle in his jaw ticked violently—a clear tell for anyone who knew how close he was to snapping. His fingers curled into tight fists inside the pockets of his overcoat.

“I told you, I don't know her,” Dominic repeated, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register that made Valentin’s henchmen nervously shift their footing. “If you want a hostage with leverage, take me. Let the civilians go.”

“Oh, we’ll get to you, Castellano,” Valentin laughed, a high, unstable sound. “But I love a good mystery. Let's see what’s inside this package first.”

Valentin reached out, grabbing Amelia roughly by the arm and hauling her to her feet despite her eight-month belly. Amelia cried out, stumbling against the counter as a wave of dizziness washed over her.

Dominic’s composure shattered.

“Let her go,” Dominic commanded, taking a fast, purposeful step forward.

“Stay back!” Valentin roared, cocking the hammer of his shotgun and pressing the cold steel directly against Amelia’s temple. “One more step and I blow her brains across this floor, baby and all!”

Dominic froze. Every drop of color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a statue carved from ash and fury. The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees, radiating a dark, lethal aura that caused even Valentin’s hardened mercenaries to swallow hard.

“You touch her,” Dominic whispered, each word enunciated with chilling, deliberate precision, “and I won't just kill you. I will dismantle your entire bloodline, salt the earth where your ancestors lie, and ensure your name is erased from human memory.”

Valentin laughed nervously, though his hand trembled slightly on the trigger. “Look at you! You do know her! The cold-blooded ghost of New York has a pregnant girlfriend!”

“She is not my girlfriend,” Dominic said, his voice dangerously soft as he kept his dark eyes locked on Valentin’s erratic movements. He was lying to protect her, but every fiber of his being was screaming to close the distance and tear the gunman apart. “She is carrying my child.”

The confession hung in the air like a lightning strike.

The hostages gasped. Valentin’s cronies exchanged uneasy glances.

Valentin grinned maliciously, realizing he had struck gold. He had stumbled not just into a bank robbery, but into the ultimate leverage against the most powerful man on the East Coast.

“Well, well, well,” Valentin purred, pressing the barrel a fraction harder against Amelia’s temple. “Looks like you’re going to have to make a choice, Castellano. Do you surrender your weapons and let my men tie you up, or do we turn your little heir into a tragedy right here on live television?”

Amelia looked past the barrel of the gun, her eyes locking onto Dominic’s. Tears tracked hot down her pale cheeks, and she shook her head frantically, mouthing No, Dominic, run.

Dominic saw the silent plea. He saw the terror in her brown eyes, and he saw the unmistakable outline of his son beneath her coat.

For months, he had lived in the shadows of a violent empire, believing he was incapable of genuine attachment, believing that his world of blood and shipping routes was no place for a family. But looking at Amelia now, he realized he had been wrong from the very first night in that hotel panic room. She wasn't just a fleeting memory; she was his missing half.

“I yield,” Dominic said quietly.

He unbuttoned his overcoat, letting it slide off his broad shoulders and drop to the marble floor. He unclipped his concealed shoulder holster, tossing the heavy SIG Sauer pistol across the tiles toward Valentin’s feet. Then he raised his hands slowly, palms open.

“Take your prize, Valentin,” Dominic said, stepping forward into the open. “Let her and the other hostages walk out right now.”

Valentin chuckled, signaling one of his men to kick Dominic’s gun away. “Oh, no, Castellano. The girl stays with us as insurance. But as a sign of good faith...”

Valentin suddenly shoved Amelia hard toward the center of the room. Unbalanced by her pregnancy, she stumbled violently, her foot catching on a piece of shattered glass.

“Ah!” Amelia screamed as she fell toward the hard marble floor.

Time seemed to slow down.

Dominic didn't hesitate. Abandoning all caution, the billionaire mafia boss lunged forward with explosive, terrifying speed, diving across the room to intercept her before she hit the ground.

He caught her in his arms just as she hit the tiles, pulling her heavy, pregnant body tightly against his chest, taking the brunt of the impact on his own shoulder and hip.

At that exact microsecond, Valentin cursed and pulled the trigger of the shotgun in panic.

The deafening roar of the blast shook the bank walls. A cloud of drywall dust and buckshot chewed through the air, and a sharp, hot agony tore straight through Dominic’s upper back as a stray pellet found its mark.

Dominic grunted, his body going rigid over Amelia’s as his warm blood began to soak through the fabric of his shirt.
