Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The glass-and-steel skyscraper housing Cross Capital hummed with tense, nervous energy.

David Cross sat at the head of the polished obsidian boardroom table, his tie slightly loosened, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead. Surrounding him were five senior board members, their faces carved from stone. On the large projection screen at the front of the room flashed a glowing red banner from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by a freezing of all corporate asset accounts.

“This is a hostile maneuver!” David slammed his fist onto the table, his face turning crimson. “Some rogue regulatory agency made a clerical error! My legal team is sorting it out right now!”

“It’s not a clerical error, David,” interrupted Marcus Sterling, the senior managing partner of the board. He tossed a thick manila folder onto the table in front of him. “The SEC didn't freeze our accounts blindly. They acted on an emergency audit petition filed by forensic accountants representing the original estate holders of the Vance Trust.”

David’s breath hitched. The color drained entirely from his face. “The Vance Trust... that’s impossible. Elena signed those rights away years ago!”

“She signed them under physical and psychological coercion,” a calm, deep voice echoed from the doorway of the boardroom.

The heavy glass doors swung open.

Marco Valente stepped into the room, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, his shoulders broad and his presence dominating the entire space. Behind him walked two federal compliance officers and, stepping out from the shadow of Marco’s shoulder with her head held high, Elena Vance.

She wore a sharp, tailored navy pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back in a sleek chignon. The bruises on her wrists were gone, replaced by an aura of icy, unshakable composure.

David leapt out of his chair, knocking his leather executive seat backward onto the carpet. “Elena! You—you ungrateful bitch! What have you done?!”

Before David could take two steps toward her, Marco stepped smoothly into his path. Marco didn't raise his voice, but the terrifying, predatory stillness in his gray eyes stopped David dead in his tracks.

“Take another step toward her, Cross, and I’ll break your jaw in front of your entire board,” Marco said quietly.

“You’re trespassing!” David screamed, spitting with rage as he looked around the room at his silent, horrified board members. “This man is a criminal! He’s a mafia boss! He’s kidnapped my wife!”

“I am not your wife, David,” Elena spoke up, her voice ringing clear and steady across the boardroom. She walked forward, stopping a safe distance from him, looking down at the man who had terrorized her for years with absolute pity. “And I haven't been kidnapped. I walked away. Because you’re a fraud, a thief, and a coward.”

Marcus Sterling stood up from the board table, adjusting his glasses. “David, effective immediately, the board is suspending you as CEO pending a full federal investigation into corporate embezzlement, asset stripping, and forgery regarding the Vance Trust.”

“You can’t do that!” David shrieked, lunging toward the desk, but federal compliance officers flanked him instantly, pinning his arms behind his back with plastic zip-ties.

“It’s over, David,” Elena said softly, turning her back on him as federal agents led him out of the boardroom in disgrace.

Marco stood beside her, watching the door close behind her former husband. He looked down at Elena, a faint, proud smile touching his lips.

“That,” Marco murmured, “was a masterpiece.”
