Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Late that evening, back at the Lincoln Park penthouse, the city lights twinkled like diamonds against the dark canvas of Lake Michigan.
The immediate threat of David Cross was neutralized. Federal marshals had taken him into custody, and Cross Capital was undergoing a court-ordered liquidation. Elena’s family trust was fully restored, giving her complete financial independence and control over her life once more.
Yet, as she stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows holding a glass of sparkling water, a strange, hollow feeling settled in her chest.
The war was over. Which meant she was free to leave.
Footsteps approached softly behind her. Marco walked into the room, holding a small manila envelope. He set it on the kitchen island and stopped a few feet away.
“Your legal team just finalized the dissolution of your marriage and the restoration of your assets,” Marco said quietly. “You’re officially a free woman, Elena.”
Elena turned around, looking at him. The man who had pulled her out of a nightmare, who had offered her shelter without demanding anything in return, was staring at her with those calm, unreadable gray eyes.
“Thank you, Marco,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “For everything. You saved my life.”
“I gave you a weapon,” Marco corrected gently. “You pulled the trigger.”
She walked slowly toward him, stopping just a foot away. She could smell the faint scent of cedar and clean soap clinging to his suit jacket. “So... what happens now? Do I pack my bags and disappear into the sunset?”
Marco’s gaze darkened, a flicker of raw emotion breaking through his guarded expression. “That depends entirely on what you want, Elena. The townhouse is yours. My protection is yours for as long as you need it. But you don’t have to hide anymore.”
“I’m not hiding,” Elena said, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She reached out, her fingers gently brushing against the lapel of his suit jacket—the same jacket that had shielded her from the terror of that rainy night. “I’m just trying to figure out where I belong.”
Marco’s hand came up, hovering for a split second before his warm fingers wrapped gently around her wrist—not with the suffocating grip of ownership she had known with David, but with a firm, grounding pressure that asked for permission.
“You belong wherever you choose to stand, Elena,” Marco murmured, his voice thick with a sudden, intense hunger. “And if you choose to stand here... no one will ever touch you again.”
Elena looked up into his eyes, seeing the absolute truth in his gaze. She didn't pull away. Instead, she stepped closer, resting her hand flat against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart.
