Chapter 4 - The War Room StrategyBy five o’clock the following morning, the subterranean safe room opened.

The Morelli estate was once again under total control. The intruders had been cleared, the perimeter security doubled, and the estate's private medical team had treated Lev, who was currently resting comfortably with a severe concussion and a fractured shoulder.

Sophie sat at the head of the long oak table in Dante’s primary tactical war room on the second floor.

She wore one of Dante’s oversized black cashmere sweaters over her skirt, a hot mug of coffee held securely between her hands. Despite having slept for only two hours on the safe room sofa—wrapped securely in Dante’s arms—she felt strangely alert, her senses sharp, her mind clear.

Around the table sat Dante’s top commanders: Marco, his chief of intelligence; Vincent, his lead legal counsel; and two regional lieutenants whose cold, calculating expressions made it clear they did not deal in legal ambiguities.

Dante stood at the head of the room, looking at a wall covered in digital maps, financial flows, and surveillance photographs of Julian Vance’s operations in Detroit and Chicago.

"Vance overplayed his hand," Marco reported, tapping a tablet screen that updated the main display. "He thought the breach would cause panic, force you to cancel the gala, and give his syndicate time to seize the northern dock terminals while your attention was divided."

"Canceling the gala is out of the question," Dante said coldly, his hands resting flat on the table. "Four hundred of the most powerful people in North America are arriving tomorrow evening. Senators, judges, international shipping executives. Canceling would signal weakness."

"Hostilities are already active, Dante," Vincent warned, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "If Vance attempts another strike during the event—"

"He won't attempt a strike on the floor," a quiet voice interrupted.

The room fell completely silent.

Every hardened man in the room turned to look at Sophie.

Marco frowned slightly, while Vincent looked surprised. Sophie didn't flinch. She set her coffee mug down with a deliberate, soft clink against the wood.

"Explain, Miss Bennett," Dante said smoothly, a spark of pride flashing briefly in his amber eyes as he looked at her.

Sophie stood up, walking toward the digital board. She pointed to the floor plan of the grand ballroom and the surrounding exhibition halls.

"Julian Vance is a businessman first and a thug second," Sophie analyzed, drawing on her years of studying high-society dynamics and power structures. "Last night was a surgical attempt to grab leverage—me—without causing a public scene. If he wanted to kill Dante, he would have used a long-range rifle at the front gates. He wanted a hostage to force a private surrender of the dock contracts."

She looked at Marco. "Now that his strike team failed, he knows Dante is on high alert. Attacking the gala publicly would ruin Vance’s political cover with his own corporate backers. He can't afford a public massacre."

"So what will he do?" Marco asked, leaning forward, genuinely listening.

"He will attend," Sophie stated simply.

Dante’s eyes narrowed. "Vance isn't on the guest list."

"He doesn't need to be," Sophie replied, pulling up a secondary spreadsheet on her tablet and casting it onto the wall display. "Three weeks ago, the Midwest Maritime Logistics Group reserved a ten-seat VIP table under the name of their managing director, Arthur Pendelton. Pendelton’s firm was acquired by a Detroit holding company four days ago. A holding company owned entirely by Julian Vance."

Dante stared at the display, his mind rapidly connecting the pieces. "He bought his way onto the floor."

"Exactly," Sophie nodded. "He will walk through the front doors in a tuxedo, surrounded by legitimate businessmen. He expects to use the gala as a neutral ground to force a quiet negotiation in one of the private study rooms while his legal team prepares the dock transfer papers."

A slow, lethal smile spread across Dante’s face. It was the smile of a predator watching a trap spring shut on an unsuspecting prey.

"He thinks he's walking into a neutral room," Dante murmured, stepping close to Sophie, his hand casually coming to rest on the small of her back—a gesture so natural, so possessively comfortable, that none of his lieutenants dared to comment on it. "He doesn't realize he's walking directly into my slaughterhouse."

"No violence on the ballroom floor," Sophie warned sternly, turning her head to look at him with a sharp glare. "I spent two months coordinating those imported silk tablecloths, Dante. If there is a single drop of blood on them, I will personally throw you into Lake Michigan."

A deep, genuine laugh echoed from Dante’s chest—a sound that made his lieutenants exchange stunned, disbelieving glances.

"You heard the lady," Dante told his team, his voice dropping back into its firm, commanding steel. "No blood on the silk. We isolate Vance the moment he steps into the east wing, execute the financial countersuit Vincent prepared, and strip his syndicate of every asset they own in Illinois before the dessert course is served."

The lieutenants nodded quickly, standing up to execute their orders.

As the room cleared, leaving only the two of them behind, Dante turned Sophie around so she was backed gently against the edge of the heavy oak table.

He placed his hands on the wood on either side of her hips, trapping her within his broad frame.

"You are incredible," Dante whispered, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against her temple. "An events coordinator who predicts mob strategy better than my head of intelligence."

"I told you," Sophie murmured, a small smile touching her lips as she reached up to adjust his collar. "I'm very good at solving problems."

Dante looked down at her, his expression turning deep, serious, and intensely affectionate.

"You're not an events coordinator anymore, Sophie," he said softly. "After tomorrow night, everyone in this city will know who you are. They will know you stand beside me."

Sophie’s breath hitched slightly. She looked into his dark, stormy eyes and saw no hesitation, no doubt—only an absolute, unyielding devotion.

"Beside you?" she asked softly.

"Beside me," Dante confirmed, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. "As my partner. As my queen. If you'll have me."

Sophie reached up, taking his face in her hands, pulling his head down until their lips were brushing.

May you like

"I think," she whispered against his mouth, "I made my intentions pretty clear when I kissed your poster."

Dante laughed softly, closing his arms around her, pulling her close as the morning sun finally broke through the clouds, illuminating the sprawling estate in a brilliant, golden light.
