Chapter 6 - The Picture and the PromiseThe exhibition hall was dark, silent, and bathed in the soft, ethereal silver glow of the moonlight streaming through the massive glass skylights seven stories above.

The noise of the gala, the orchestra, and the four hundred guests felt millions of miles away.

Dante led Sophie by the hand through the quiet hall, stopping directly in front of the seven-foot promotional poster of himself.

The poster stood just as it had three nights ago—large, imposing, and dramatic.

Sophie looked at the poster, then at the real man standing beside her, and let out a soft, melodious laugh that echoed through the empty hall.

"It really is a ridiculous poster," Sophie remarked teasingly, leaning her head back to look up at the towering print.

"I agree," Dante smiled, turning to face her, his hands coming to rest on her waist. "I told the marketing director it was far too arrogant. But he insisted it was good for fundraising."

"Well," Sophie murmured, stepping closer, resting her hands against his velvet lapels, "it certainly caught my attention."

Dante looked down at her, his stormy amber eyes shining with a love so profound, so absolute, that it took Sophie’s breath away.

"You saved my life, Sophie," Dante said softly, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional register. "Not just from Vance's men, but from... this."

He gestured vaguely to the dark, cavernous hall, to the shadows of his past, to the cold, lonely throne he had occupied for years.

"I spent ten years building an empire out of steel, blood, and fear," Dante continued, his thumb gently stroking her lip. "I thought that was all I was allowed to have. I thought love was a vulnerability I couldn't afford."

He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers.

"Then a brave, brilliant, utterly reckless woman walked into my life, organized my chaos, and kissed a piece of foam board because she thought nobody was watching."

Sophie smiled, tears of pure happiness welling in her eyes. "I'm very glad you were watching."

"I will always be watching you, Sophie," Dante promised, his voice thick with absolute conviction. "I will protect you, cherish you, and stand beside you for the rest of my days. Every threat, every shadow, every enemy in this world will have to go through me before they ever reach you."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet ring box.

He didn't kneel. He didn't need to. In his world, Dante Morelli knelt for no one—except the woman who held his heart.

He slowly dropped to one knee on the polished marble floor of the exhibition hall, right beneath the poster where their story had begun.

He opened the box, revealing a flawless, six-carat emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the moonlight, burning with a brilliant, blinding radiance.

"Sophie Bennett," Dante said, looking up at her with raw, exposed devotion, "will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and my queen?"

Sophie gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears spilled over her eyelashes, falling like tiny diamonds down her cheeks.

She looked down at the man who had terrified Chicago, the man who had fought through shadows to keep her safe, the man who loved her with every beat of his heart.

"Yes," Sophie whispered, her voice ringing clear and true through the silent hall. "Yes, Dante! Absolutely yes!"

Dante stood up instantly, slipping the ring onto her finger before pulling her into a powerful, breathtaking embrace that lifted her feet off the floor.

He spun her around in the moonlight, his deep, joyful laughter filling the empty hall—a sound of pure, unadulterated happiness that wiped away years of cold, lonely silence.

When he set her down, he captured her mouth in a passionate, slow, lingering kiss that sealed their future forever.

High above them, through the glass skylight, the stars shone brightly over Chicago.

The poster behind them remained silent, a harmless piece of paper from a past that was already fading away.

Because the real Dante Morelli was right here—holding the woman he loved, kissing her back, and never letting go.
