Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

Ten minutes later, the atmosphere inside the private management suite on the top floor of Preston Galleria was suffocating.

Vanessa Cole stood behind her massive glass executive desk, her arms crossed tight, trying to maintain an air of professional superiority. However, the sudden arrival of four SUV blacked-out Escalades in the VIP valet lower bay had drawn a crowd downstairs, and the men who had just stepped out of the private elevator were not ordinary visitors.

Richard Walker entered the office first.

He was a man in his late fifties, silver-haired, immaculate in a dark navy tailored suit, carrying the heavy, quiet authority of a man who had built half the skyline of North Texas. Behind him was Claire Walker, her face pale, tears streaking her makeup, held up by Richard’s arm.

Behind them stepped Lucas and Sophia.

Vanessa stood up straighter, her eyes flickering nervously between Richard and the young man in the worn jacket. "Mr. Walker... I didn't expect a corporate visit today. We were just clearing out an unauthorized trespasser downstairs—"

Richard didn't even look at Vanessa. He didn't look at the plush leather chairs, the mahogany paneling, or the panoramic window overlooking the shopping center below.

His eyes locked onto Lucas.

"My son," Claire sobbed, breaking away from her husband.

She reached Lucas in three frantic steps, her hands trembling as she touched his face, tracing the scar along his temple, mapping the sharp line of his jaw as if confirming he was made of flesh and blood. "Lucas... oh, my God, my baby... you're alive. You're alive."

Lucas stood frozen for a second. The physical touch—the scent of her rose perfume, the gentle softness of her trembling fingers—sent a wave of warmth rushing through his chest, breaking through the ice of his amnesia.

"Mom," the word escaped his lips instinctively. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, burying his face against her shoulder as months of silent isolation dissolved in a single, ragged breath.

Richard stepped forward, his eyes wet with unshed tears, and placed a broad, heavy hand on Lucas’s neck, pulling both his wife and son into a fierce embrace. "We thought we lost you, son. We spent seven weeks looking at riverbanks and morgues."

Vanessa Cole felt the floor beneath her high heels begin to tilt.

Her face drained of all color. Her breath caught in her throat. She looked at the young man she had threatened, the man whose silver pendant she had sneered at, the man she had ordered to clean her designer shoes and thrown twenty dollars at on the floor.

He’s Richard Walker’s son.

"Mr... Mr. Walker," Vanessa stammered, her voice shaking violently as she stepped around her desk. "I... I had no idea. He was down in the atrium, he didn't identify himself, he was operating a shoe-shine setup without authorization—"

Richard turned slowly to face her. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory focus that had made him feared across every board room in the state.

"My son owns thirty-two percent of this entire development, Miss Cole," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "His trust holds the primary mortgage deed to the very floor you are standing on. He doesn't need 'authorization' to stand in his own building."

Vanessa looked as though she had been struck by lightning. "Thirty-two... percent?"

"Sophia told me what happened downstairs," Richard continued, taking a slow step toward her. "You humiliated an injured man. You threw money on the floor and told him to crawl for it. You treated a human being like garbage simply because you believed he had no power to fight back."

"I... I was enforcing mall standards!" Vanessa cried out desperately, looking to the other executives in the room for support, but they all looked away, staring at the carpet. "I didn't know who he was!"

"That," Lucas said, speaking up for the first time, his voice cutting clearly through the room, "is precisely the problem."

Everyone turned to look at Lucas. He pulled himself back from his mother’s embrace, standing tall. Though his clothes were old and worn, his posture was unyielding, his gaze fixed on Vanessa with total clarity.

"If a person’s dignity depends entirely on whether or not you know their bank account balance," Lucas said quietly, "then you are entirely unfit to manage anything built by human hands."

Vanessa swallowed hard, her tongue feeling like lead. "Lucas... please. It was a misunderstanding. I was stressed—"

"Save it," Richard interrupted coldly. He turned to his head of legal, who had just walked into the room carrying a thick leather binder. "Harrison, place Miss Cole on immediate administrative leave pending a full audit of her department. I want her security access revoked, her corporate accounts frozen, and her personal belongings escorted out of this building by end of day."

"You can't do that!" Vanessa gasped. "Board approval requires—"

"I own the remaining sixty-eight percent, Miss Cole," Richard said flatly. "I am the board."

Two security officers stepped forward, placing themselves on either side of Vanessa. The confidence that had defined her morning was utterly broken. As she was escorted out of her office, her head hung low, the clicks of her expensive heels sounding like a death march across the polished floorboards.

Once the door closed, Richard turned back to Lucas, his expression instantly softening into deep concern. "Lucas... what happened to you on Highway 77? The police said your car was forced off the bridge into the river. We thought you drowned."

Lucas leaned back against the mahogany table, pressing two fingers against his temple as memories continued to break through the fog in heavy, jagged waves.

"It wasn't an accident, Dad," Lucas said, his eyes narrowing as a specific image crystallized in his mind. "The night before I disappeared, I was going through the quarterly expansion reports for the new logistics hub in Fort Worth."

Richard froze. "The Fort Worth project?"

"I found a discrepancy," Lucas remembered aloud, his voice gaining strength as his analytical mind reassembled the past. "Twelve million dollars transferred to an offshore holding company named Vanguard Apex. I called a meeting with the lead partner to demand an explanation."

Sophia took a sharp breath. "Who was the lead partner, Lucas?"

Lucas looked directly into his father’s eyes. "Uncle Marcus."
