Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Arrogant

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, the news of Marcus Walker’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the financial world. But for Lucas, the day’s work was far from complete.
At Preston Galleria, the mood inside the main atrium was tense.
Vanessa Cole had spent her administrative leave pacing back and forth in the security office, furiously calling her lawyers, insisting that the whole thing was a procedural error that would be fixed by end of day. When her calls to Marcus Walker went straight to voicemail, she began to sweat.
At 2:30 PM, the atrium double doors opened, and a large group of people walked into the main concourse.
Shoppers and mall employees stopped to watch.
Leading the group was Lucas Walker, dressed in his crisp tailored suit, accompanied by Richard, Sophia, the entire executive committee of Walker Holdings, and a news crew from the local Dallas network that had been invited to document the announcement of the mall’s new management structure.
Vanessa Cole pushed her way out of the security office, her heart pounding against her ribs. She saw Lucas walking toward the central fountain—the very spot where she had dropped the twenty-dollar bill twenty-four hours earlier.
She sprinted down the marble corridor, her face pale, desperately trying to straighten her suit jacket. "Mr. Walker! Mr. Walker, please!"
Lucas stopped near the edge of the fountain, turning to look at her as the camera crew adjusted their lenses, broadcast live to thousands of viewers across Texas.
Vanessa reached him, gasping for air, her former arrogance completely replaced by groveling desperation. "Mr. Walker... I’m so glad you’re back. I wanted to apologize again for yesterday. If I had known who you were, I would have treated you with the utmost respect!"
Lucas looked at her with cool, unblinking eyes. "That is your second mistake today, Miss Cole."
Vanessa blinked, confused. "What?"
"You just admitted on live television that your respect is reserved only for wealthy men in suits," Lucas said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent, packed atrium.
A collective murmur passed through the gathering crowd of shoppers and store employees who had gathered along the upper balconies to watch.
Lucas signaled to Harrison, who handed him a folder.
"While reviewing the Galleria’s operational records last night," Lucas announced, turning to face both Vanessa and the camera crew, "we discovered that under Miss Cole’s short tenure, five low-income maintenance workers were fired without cause, tenant fees were illegally inflated by fifteen percent, and funds allocated for employee healthcare were diverted into executive bonuses."
Vanessa’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"Furthermore," Lucas continued, looking down at her, "yesterday you attempted to humiliate a man working honest labor on this floor. You told him his work had no value. You told him he was less than human."
"I... I was wrong!" Vanessa squeaked, tears of total embarrassment streaming down her face as shoppers began pulling out their phones to film her. "Please... give me another chance! I have a career!"
Lucas reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out a crisp twenty-dollar bill.
He held it between two fingers, letting it hover over the marble floor, exactly as she had done to him.
Vanessa looked at the money, then up at his face, her body trembling with profound humiliation. She knew what he was asking. She thought he was going to make her kneel on the floor and pick it up in front of the cameras.
The entire crowd held its breath.
Lucas looked at the bill, then looked at Vanessa’s terrified, tear-streaked face.
Instead of dropping it, Lucas folded the bill neatly and placed it back into his pocket.
"I won't drop it," Lucas said softly, his tone devoid of malice, carrying only profound moral clarity. "Because unlike you, Miss Cole, I don't believe in breaking people to make myself feel tall."
The crowd on the balconies erupted into sudden, loud applause.
Vanessa froze, staring at him in utter shock.
"You are officially terminated as General Manager of Preston Galleria, effective immediately," Lucas stated calmly. "Security will escort you off the property, and our legal team will be filing recovery suits for the diverted maintenance funds."
Two security officers stepped up, placing firm hands on Vanessa’s arms. As she was led away through the crowd of cheering employees, she looked back one last time at the young man standing by the fountain—the man she had called a beggar, who had just demonstrated what true royalty looked like.
Lucas turned to face the gathered mall staff, including the janitors, security guards, and retail workers who had stood near the back.
"Starting today," Lucas announced, his voice reverberating under the soaring glass dome, "Preston Galleria will establish a permanent fair-wage guarantee for all service workers. Furthermore, we are establishing a five-million-dollar foundation—named after the shelter that took me in when I had nothing—to provide emergency housing, medical care, and legal support for the unhoused workers of Dallas."

The applause that followed was deafening.
Sophia walked up beside him, her eyes shining with tears of absolute pride, and took his hand. Lucas looked down at her, feeling a profound sense of warmth and purpose that money could never buy.
