Chapter 3 - The Viper in the Nest

By three o'clock in the morning, the rain had set in, lashing against the tall windows of my study. The mahogany desk was covered in files, security logs, and financial records.

Victor stood at attention across from me, his face grim.

"The three gunmen from the restaurant," I began, my voice flat. "Who did they belong to?"

"No local crews, boss," Victor replied. "We ran their fingerprints. They're high-end mercenaries out of Philadelphia. Freelancers. But their burner phones had one local number in common. A spoofed line that traces back to an encrypted server in the Financial District."

"And who owns that server?"

Victor hesitated, a rare flicker of unease crossing his stoic face. "It's a shell company registered under the name Vance Holdings."

I paused, my pen hovering over a document.

Silas Vance.

Silas was my underboss. He had been with me for twelve years, managing the shipping ports and the offshore accounts. He was a quiet, calculating man—the kind who kept his head down and did his job with ruthless efficiency. When Eli died, Silas had been the one to comfort me, the one who helped me carry the casket.

The deepest cuts always come from the blades you never see, held by the hands you trusted most.

"Silas," I murmured, the name tasting like ash on my tongue. "He wanted Eli's seat on the council. He knew Eli was suspicious of his skimming from the port accounts. If Eli spoke, Silas was finished. So he had Eli killed, and then he sought to eliminate the only witness who could link him to the hit—Adriana."

"What are your orders, Damon?" Victor asked, his hand instinctively drifting toward his sidearm. "Do we take him out?"

"No," I said, a slow, predatory smile spreading across my face. "A quick death is too merciful for a traitor. Silas thinks he's a chess player. He thinks he's played me. I want him to watch his entire world crumble before I end him. We start with his pockets. Cut off his supply lines at the harbor. Freeze his offshore assets. Let him feel the walls closing in."

"And the Marquettis?"

"The Marquettis were Silas's primary money-laundering vehicle," I explained, leaning back in my chair. "They were desperate for that bailout because Silas was squeezing them dry. By morning, the Marquetti Hotel Group will file for bankruptcy. Buy up their debt. I want Celeste and her husband on the street by noon."

"Understood." Victor turned to leave, but stopped at the door. "And the girl, boss?"

"I’ll look after her myself."

I left the study and walked down the quiet, dimly lit hallway to the guest wing. I opened the door to Adriana’s room. The soft glow of the fire illuminated her sleeping face. She looked peaceful for the first time in months, her hand resting protectively over her belly.

I stood there in the doorway, watching over her. I had spent thirty-four years believing that power was the only thing that mattered. But looking at Eli's wife, carrying the future of the brother who had saved me, I realized something else.

Power without purpose is just a gilded cage. Adriana and her baby were my purpose now. And God help anyone who tried to take them away.
