Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Citadel

The storm that hit Boston that night was the worst the city had seen in a decade. Gale-force winds whipped the sea into a frenzy, throwing massive waves against the cliffs below Blackwood Manor. Heavy rain lashed against the stone walls like shrapnel.

Inside, the manor was bathed in the red glow of emergency backup lights.

"He's not waiting for me to go to Weymouth," I said, adjusting the tactical vest over my black shirt. "The message was a diversion. He’s coming here. He knows this is his only chance to kill me and Adriana before my entire syndicate turns on him."

"Sensors show three black SUVs approaching the main gates," Victor reported, his voice calm despite the impending chaos. "They’ve cut the main power lines. They’re using military-grade signal jammers."

"Let them come," I growled, checking the chamber of my assault rifle. "This house was built to survive a war."

I walked to the safe room in the basement, where Adriana was waiting. The room was reinforced with concrete and three-inch-thick steel doors.

She looked up as I entered, her face pale. "Damon... please don't go out there."

"I have to, Adriana," I said, kneeling before her. I took her hands, kissing the knuckles gently. "This ends tonight. Keep this door locked. Do not open it for anyone but me or Victor. Do you understand?"

Suddenly, she gasped, her face contorting in pain. She clutched her stomach, her breath catching in her throat.

"Adriana? What is it?" I asked, panic flaring in my chest—a feeling far more terrifying than any gunfight.

"The baby..." she gasped, sweat instantly breaking out on her forehead. "Damon... my water just broke. It's too early... the baby is coming!"

Dammit.

The timing couldn't have been worse. Outside, the first heavy thump of an explosive echoed through the foundation of the house. Silas's men had breached the outer gates.

"Aris!" I barked into my radio. "Get down to the safe room now! Adriana is in labor!"

"I'm on my way!" the doctor's voice crackled back through the static.

I looked at Adriana, her eyes wide with terror as another contraction hit her. I grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look at me. "Focus on me, Adriana. You are the strongest woman I know. You survived six months on the run alone. You can do this. I am going to secure this house, and then I will be right back here to welcome Eli's child into the world. Trust me."

She nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I trust you, Damon. Go."

I stood up, my heart hammering a furious rhythm against my ribs. I locked the safe room door behind me, the heavy steel deadbolts sliding into place with a definitive thud.

I turned to find Victor waiting for me in the corridor, his rifle ready.

"They're inside the foyer, boss," he said. "Silas is leading them himself."

"Then let's show them how we treat trespassers in Boston," I snarled.

We moved through the dark hallways of the manor like ghosts. The storm howled outside, providing the perfect cover.

Pop. Pop.

Victor neutralized two mercenaries in the dining room with silent, professional efficiency. I bypassed them, heading straight for the main grand staircase.

There, standing in the center of my shattered foyer, was Silas Vance. He was surrounded by six heavily armed mercenaries, his face twisted in a desperate, maniacal grin.

"Calas!" Silas shouted over the roaring wind of the shattered front doors. "I know you're here! Give me the girl and the kid, and maybe I'll let you live long enough to watch me run your empire!"

"You always did have a big mouth, Silas," I called out from the shadows of the upper balcony. "But you never did have the stomach for a real fight."

Silas spun around, pointing his weapon upward. "Kill him!"

The foyer erupted into a hellscape of muzzle flashes and deafening gunfire. I dropped behind the marble balustrade as bullets chipped away the stone, raining dust down on me. I leaned out, firing three rapid-fire shots. Two of Silas's mercenaries dropped, their blood staining my pristine white rugs.

Victor flanked them from the side, unleashing a hail of fire that tore through the remaining guards.

Silas, realizing his men were dropping like flies, panicked. He turned and bolted down the eastern wing of the house—the hallway leading directly to the basement stairs.

The safe room.

"No, you don't," I roared.

I vaulted over the balcony railing, landing hard on the marble floor below. Ignoring the pain shooting through my knees, I sprinted after him, my boots clicking rhythmically against the stone.

I cornered him at the top of the basement stairs. Silas turned, his face pale, his gun raised. But I was faster.

I lunged forward, slamming my rifle into his wrist. His gun clattered down the stairs. I grabbed him by the collar, slamming him hard against the stone wall.

"You betrayed Eli," I growled, my fingers digging into his throat, cutting off his air. "You tried to murder his wife. You tried to murder his child."

"He... he was going to ruin us..." Silas choked out, his eyes bulging as he clawed at my hands. "He was weak, Damon... like you've become!"

"Eli was ten times the man you will ever be," I whispered, pulling my dagger from my tactical belt. The blade gleamed in the red emergency light. "And I am not weak. I am just finally cleaning my house."

With a swift, practiced motion, I drove the blade deep into his chest. Silas gasped, his eyes widening in shock. I held him there, watching the light slowly drain from his eyes, until his body went completely limp.

I let him slide to the floor, a pool of dark blood spreading around him.

The storm outside seemed to quiet down, the thunder fading into the distance. From the basement below, through the heavy steel doors of the safe room, a new sound pierced the silence of the manor.

The sharp, fragile cry of a newborn baby.
