Chapter 3 - The Obliteration of Vance EnterprisesA Lesson in ConsequencesThe private executive conference room on the ground floor of St. Jude's Hospital was lined with frosted glass and guarded by four of Julian’s heavily armed security personnel.

Inside, Richard Vance—the patriarch of Vance Enterprises—was pacing back and forth furiously, his face flushed red with exertion and anxiety. His son, Arthur, sat trembling in a chair, staring blankly at his hands. Cordelia stood near the wall, her eyes swollen from crying, still wearing her ruined red gown, though her posture remained stubbornly defensive.

The door clicked open.

Julian Thorne walked in alone. He took a seat at the head of the long conference table, leaning back in his chair, folding his hands together. He didn't offer them seats, nor did he offer a greeting. The air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees.

"Mr. Thorne!" Richard Vance rushed forward, slamming his hands onto the table. "This is insane! Over the last two hours, three of our primary construction contracts have been unilaterally terminated! Our master lines of credit at Manhattan International Bank were frozen at 10:00 PM! Our stock has dropped forty percent in after-hours trading! What is the meaning of this war?!"

Julian raised an eyebrow slowly. "Your daughter shoved a pregnant woman into a glass mirror in my hotel."

"It was an ACCIDENT!" Cordelia shrieked, taking a step forward. "She was in my way! She's a low-class servant! You can't ruin my family's entire legacy over a clumsy waitress!"

SLAP!

The sound echoed sharply through the room.

Richard Vance had turned around and struck his own daughter across the face with his open palm. Cordelia stumbled back, holding her stinging cheek in absolute shock.

"Shut up, you brainless fool!" Richard roared at her, his chest heaving. "Do you have any idea who you put your hands on?! You touched Julian Thorne’s guest in his own house!"

Richard turned back to Julian, dropping to his knees beside the conference table, shedding all remaining pride. "Mr. Thorne... please. Cordelia is spoiled, she is foolish, but Vance Enterprises employs over twelve hundred people. My grandfather built this company! We will pay for the waitress’s medical bills! We will give her a million dollars! Five million! Just stop the liquidation!"

Julian looked down at the kneeling billionaire with an expression of quiet, detached observation, as if watching an insect squirm under a microscope.

"Five million dollars?" Julian asked softly. "You think Della Marsh’s dignity and the life of her unborn child can be bought for five million dollars?"

"Ten million!" Richard begged. "Whatever you want!"

"When my men reviewed the security footage from the Ashworth lobby tonight," Julian said smoothly, leaning forward, "we didn't just watch Cordelia shove Della. We ran a background check on Cordelia’s recent activities."

Arthur looked up, his eyes widening in terror. "W-What background check?"

Julian pulled a thick paper dossier from his folder and tossed it onto the table. It slid across the wood, stopping right in front of Arthur.

"It turns out," Julian said, "that six months ago, Cordelia Vance engaged the services of a private investigator to stalk a young woman named Della Marsh. Why? Because Arthur... before you proposed to Cordelia for her family’s money, you were seeing Della. And when Della got pregnant, you paid off her landlord to evict her, cut off her phone, and told her if she ever came near you again, you’d destroy her."

Cordelia froze, staring at her fiancé in horror. "What?! Arthur... you knew her?!"

"Cordelia knew who Della was the moment she stepped into that lobby tonight," Julian revealed, his voice like a executioner's blade. "It was no accident. Cordelia targeted her. She intentionally humiliated her, intentionally shoved her, hoping to make her miscarry Arthur’s child so there would be no loose ends to threaten her marriage."

The room fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence.

Richard Vance stared at his daughter, then at Arthur, realizing the depth of the trap his family had walked into. It wasn't a random act of arrogance; it was a pre-meditated, malicious assault on the woman who held Julian Thorne’s heart.

"You..." Richard whispered, turning to Cordelia with pure despair. "You destroyed us."

Julian stood up slowly, buttoning his dress shirt cuffs.

"By 9:00 AM tomorrow," Julian announced calmly, "Vance Enterprises will be declared insolvent. Federal auditors will seize your personal properties, your luxury vehicles, and your offshore accounts to satisfy the debt defaults I have purchased. You, Richard, will be forced into early, penniless retirement. Arthur... you will be indicted for corporate embezzlement based on the evidence I sent to the District Attorney twenty minutes ago."

"And Cordelia," Julian added, turning his dark eyes onto the trembling woman in red. "You will be arrested outside this hospital for felony aggravated assault against a pregnant woman and attempted reckless endangerment of a minor. The bail will be set at ten million dollars. Money your family no longer has."

"No... please... NO!" Cordelia screamed, falling to her knees, clutching at Julian’s pants leg. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Please don't put me in prison! I'll apologize to her! I'll beg her on my knees!"

Julian stepped back, letting her hands fall uselessly to the floor.

"You had your chance to treat her like a human being," Julian said coldly. "Now, you will learn what happens when you treat her like an enemy."

Two uniformed police officers stepped through the frosted glass doors, pulling handcuffs from their belts as they moved toward Cordelia.

Julian walked out of the room, leaving the screams of the Vance family echoing behind him.
