Chapter 2 - The Lion's DenAt precisely 7:55 the following morning, Claire walked down the narrow, carpeted stairs of her apartment building and pushed open the heavy front door.

The rain from the night before had cleared, leaving the air sharp and cold. Standing beside the rear door of the black sedan was Marco, dressed in the same sharp suit, holding a large umbrella over his shoulder.
When he saw Claire, he bowed his head slightly and opened the door.
"Good morning, Miss Dawson," Marco said respectfully. "Mr. De Luca is waiting for you."
Claire looked at the dark tinted windows of the vehicle. She knew who Roman De Luca was now. After receiving the book, she had spent half the night researching the De Luca name online.
The public records described Roman De Luca as an international shipping magnate, a real estate developer, and a philanthropist. But the dark web forums, tabloid crime columns, and whispered rumors told a very different story: the De Luca family controlled the docks, the transport unions, and the private security networks across eastern North America and Europe. They were the apex predators of the city's underworld.
And yet, he had sent her a rare 19th-century novel because his sister remembered a offhand detail from a conversation.
Claire took a deep breath, straightened her coat, and stepped into the back of the car.
The interior was lined with soft leather and smelled of expensive cedarwood and espresso. Roman sat on the right side, a thin leather portfolio resting on his knee, a crystal glass of sparkling water in his hand.
"Good morning, Claire," Roman said softly, gesturing to the seat beside him.
"Mr. De Luca," Claire replied, sitting down and smoothing her skirt. "Thank you for the book. It's breathtaking, but I really cannot accept—"
"If you attempt to return it, I will simply buy another one and send it to you again," Roman interrupted smoothly, a small, amused glint in his dark eyes. "My sister insisted. She said a woman who values her honor as much as you do deserves to hold something truly valuable."
The sedan pulled away from the curb, merging seamlessly into the morning traffic.
"Where are we going?" Claire asked, looking out the window as they headed toward the commercial district.
"To rectify an injustice," Roman replied simply. "Yesterday, a woman named Vanessa Hart uploaded a fabricated video to damage your character. Today, her father’s PR firm is holding a press conference at the Grand Palace Hotel to address 'online harassment against digital creators.'"
Claire turned to him, her eyes wide. "Her father owns a PR firm?"
"Richard Hart," Roman explained, leaning back against the leather headrest. "He specializes in cleaning up the messes made by wealthy, spoiled children. He believes he can manipulate the media to destroy a working girl’s reputation before she can defend herself. He does not know that Elena’s legal team has already seized the cafe’s original security footage and audio logs."
"How did you get the cafe's footage?" Claire asked. "Martin refused to show it to anyone."
Roman offered a slow, dangerous smile. "Martin sold his business to my holding company at two o'clock this morning. At a forty percent discount."
Claire stared at him, stunned. "You bought the cafe?"
"I bought the building, the business, and Martin's employment contract," Roman said coldly. "Martin is currently unemployed and facing charges of negligence and fraud regarding employee tip allocations. I do not tolerate people who abuse those under their care."
The sedan pulled up to the grand entrance of the Palace Hotel. A swarm of reporters, photographers, and camera crews were gathered on the steps, where Richard Hart and his daughter Vanessa were standing behind a podium covered in microphones.
Vanessa looked pristine, wearing a modest white dress, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue while her father spoke dramatically into the microphones about "the dangerous atmosphere faced by young female influencers from aggressive service staff."
The car door opened. Marco held it open for Roman, who stepped out into the bright morning light. He turned and offered his hand to Claire.
Claire looked at his hand—large, strong, covered in a fine silver signet ring bearing the De Luca family crest. She took a breath, placed her fingers in his, and stepped out onto the red carpet.
The flashing of camera lights was instantaneous.
"Mr. De Luca! Is that Roman De Luca?" a reporter shouted.
"Why is the De Luca Group here?" another called out.
Richard Hart stopped mid-sentence at the podium, his face draining of color as he recognized the man walking toward him.
Roman did not hurry. He walked up the hotel steps with an effortless, predatory grace, his arm lightly brushing Claire’s as he led her directly to the center of the stage.
"Mr. Hart," Roman said, his voice echoing clearly over the whispering media crowd without needing a microphone. "I believe your daughter forgot to show the media the second half of her video."
Vanessa shrank back behind her father, her eyes wide with sudden terror as she recognized Claire.
"Roman..." Richard Hart stammered, stepping away from the podium. "This... this is a private family matter regarding my daughter's business—"
"Your daughter committed a federal crime by illegally recording a blind woman, hiding her mobility device, and substituting alcohol into her beverage," Roman interrupted calmly. He gestured toward the large digital screen mounted above the hotel entrance.
Marco pressed a button on an encrypted tablet.
The massive digital screen flickered to life, replacing Vanessa’s advertising banners with crystal-clear 4K security video from the cafe.
The high-definition audio blasted through the hotel speakers. Vanessa’s sweet, cruelty-laced voice echoed across the plaza: “Did you lose something?” followed by the clear visual of her sliding Elena’s cane behind the plant and swapping her tea for an alcoholic cocktail.
The plaza went completely silent. Cameras pivoted frantically from the screen to Vanessa, whose face turned beet red as she covered her face with her hands.
Then, the video showed Claire stepping forward, calmly retrieving the cane, placing it safely into Elena’s hands, and defending her dignity against the entire room.
"The young woman standing beside me," Roman said, placing a firm, protective hand on Claire’s shoulder, "is Claire Dawson. Yesterday, she lost her employment because she chose honor over compliance. Today, the De Luca family wishes to clear her name publicly."
Roman turned his gaze down to Richard Hart. "You have one hour to issue a full public retraction and a written apology to my sister, Mr. Hart. If you do not, my legal firm will file lawsuits that will liquidate your PR agency before the week is out."
Without waiting for an answer, Roman turned Claire around, guiding her smoothly back down the steps toward the waiting sedan, leaving behind a chaotic storm of flashing cameras and shouting journalists.
As they stepped back into the quiet luxury of the car, Claire’s heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her throat. She looked at Roman, who was calmly adjusting his silk cuffs as if he had just checked the weather.
"Why did you do that?" Claire asked softly, her voice trembling.
Roman looked at her, his dark amber eyes searching her face. "Because no one tears down someone who stands up for my blood. And because you deserved to have the world see you for who you truly are, Claire."

"A waitress?"
"A warrior," Roman corrected softly. "Now... let us discuss your grandmother's shop."
