Chapter 4 - Shadows Over the Grand OpeningSix weeks passed in a blur of dust, paint, and endless hard work.

Claire lived inside The Paper & Bean. She hired three local university students as baristas, spent long nights restoring her grandmother's original furniture, and personally curated a collection of over three thousand vintage and modern books.
Near the front window, she built a stunning, sound-insulated reading nook lined with plush leather armchairs, soft velvet curtains, and high-end audio systems equipped with screen readers and braille-labeled controls—Elena’s sanctuary.
Roman visited almost every evening after six.
He never brought his security team inside. He would leave Marco and the SUVs parked two blocks away, walking down the quiet street alone, stepping into the shop through the back door. He would shed his dark overcoat, roll up his white shirtsleeves, and quietly help Claire lift heavy crates of books or assemble wooden shelving units.
Claire learned to watch for those moments. She learned that despite his ruthless reputation, Roman was a man of quiet habits. He drank his coffee black, with a single drop of vanilla. He possessed an extraordinary knowledge of 19th-century history. And whenever he looked at her, his dark eyes held a fierce, protective heat that made her heart race in her chest.
One rainy Tuesday evening, three days before the grand opening, Claire was standing on a wooden ladder, arranging a row of first-edition poetry books on the top shelf.
Her foot slipped on the wet rung.
"Claire!"
Roman moved like lightning. Before she could hit the floor, his massive arms caught her mid-air, pulling her tightly against his chest.
Claire gasped, her hands instinctively clutching his broad shoulders. She was suspended in his arms, her heart hammering against her ribs, her face inches from his. She could feel the hard, solid muscle beneath his shirt, the heat radiating off his body, the ragged sound of his breath.
Roman didn't put her down immediately. His dark eyes searched her face, dropping briefly to her lips before rising back to meet her gaze.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice dropping into a low, rough whisper.
"No..." Claire murmured, her breath catching in her throat. "I'm... I'm fine. Thanks to you."
Roman's hands tightened slightly on her waist, holding her flush against him for one agonizing, beautiful second. "You need to be more careful, Claire," he whispered. "I can't be everywhere at once."
"I think you're everywhere I need you to be," she whispered back, completely unable to hide the emotion in her voice.
Roman’s eyes darkened with a powerful, unspoken desire. He slowly leaned down, his lips brushing against her cheek, sending a wave of electricity straight down her spine.
Before his lips could reach hers, the front glass window of the shop shattered with a deafening CRASH.
A heavy brick wrapped in black electrical tape burst through the glass, slamming into the wooden display counter and sending glass shards flying across the floor.
Roman instantly turned his body, shielding Claire completely with his frame, absorbing several stray glass splinters across his dark wool vest.
"Stay down!" Roman growled, setting Claire safely behind the heavy oak counter.
He drew a sleek, suppressed firearm from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed, stepping over the shattered glass toward the broken window.
Out on the rain-slicked street, a black motorcycle with a obscured license plate sped away into the darkness, its engine roaring loudly through the quiet neighborhood.
Roman stood near the shattered window, his weapon held at his side, his face carved out of sheer, unadulterated ice.
Claire crept out from behind the counter, her face pale, her hands shaking as she looked at the brick resting on the floor.
"Roman..." she whispered, terror clutching at her throat. "Who did this?"
Roman walked over to the brick, crouched down, and carefully peeled off the black electrical tape wrapping it. Tucked beneath the tape was a small, torn piece of parchment bearing a stamped red crest—a coiled viper over an iron dagger.
Roman’s jaw tightened, a cold, lethal fury burning in his eyes.
"The Moretti family," Roman said softly, his voice carrying the chill of the grave. "Domenico Moretti."
Marco burst through the back door, his weapon drawn, two security guards right behind him. "Boss! Are you alright? We heard the glass!"
"I'm fine," Roman said, standing up and tucking his weapon back into his holster. "Clean this up. Put four extra men on the perimeter. No one enters this street without my clearance."
"Who is Domenico Moretti?" Claire asked, stepping closer to Roman, her eyes filled with worry. "Why is he attacking the shop?"
Roman turned to her, his expression softening as he reached out to brush a stray piece of glass off her shoulder.
"Domenico Moretti is the head of the southern crime syndicate," Roman explained quietly. "He has been trying to break into the shipping district for five years. He knows I bought this building. He knows I cleared Vanessa Hart's smear campaign. He thinks that by targeting this shop, he can force me into a territorial dispute."
Roman took Claire’s hands in his, his grip firm and reassuring. "I brought this danger to your doorstep, Claire. If you want to cancel the opening... if you want to walk away from this contract... I will understand. I will buy out your share and ensure you are safe."
Claire looked at the broken glass on the floor, then down at Roman’s hand holding hers.
She remembered the way she had felt in the cafe when Martin had ordered her to apologize to bullies. She remembered the fear of being small, of being stepped on by powerful people who thought they owned the world.
"No," Claire said firmly, looking directly into Roman's eyes. "My grandmother spent thirty years keeping this shop open through wars, economic crashes, and neighborhood gangs. I am not letting Domenico Moretti or anyone else scare me out of my own life."

Roman stared at her for a moment, then let out a low, breathless laugh, his eyes shining with deep admiration and something far more dangerous—love.
"God help me, Claire Dawson," Roman whispered, cupping her face in his warm hands and pressing his forehead against hers. "You really are incredible."
